I am not a transmission expert but seems like the tranny shifts and operates the best when cold. There has to be a sensor or something somewhere that reads the temperature,so why not unhook it or clip the wires and see what happens?

Ok,I know I had a 1983 Chevrolet truck that started getting a vibration or stumble to it when the torque converter would lock up.I took it to a mechanic to look at and he said he just unplugged it?Never had any more issues with truck, always shifted perfect after that!

My transmission is more efficient when the truck is fully up to operating temp. Transmission feels like it's stuck in 5th gear otherwise. As far as shifting, its very smooth, and on cue all the time.

This isn't 1985, mods like that don't work anymore. :pout:

    1) Check engine light will be on because the computer can tell that the converter isn't locked. Probably end up in a limp mode.
    2) Even if it did work the transmission temperature would be very high due to the converter slip.

    2 sensors inside the tranny.
Just get a tune. You are on the wrong path

Just here to say I agree. Truck not warmed up, especially in ECT mode is much better shifting. Transmission becomes obsessed with its 5th gear once warm and hates downshifting from it.

I’m still confused about all the tranny shifting complaints . I’ve had my 23 trd off road about 6 weeks now and put almost 4000km on it .
I’ve driven it in all types of conditions.. highway in the flats as well as in the mountains.. with cruise on amd without .. city .. off road lots . And I have zero complaints with this truck and it’s transmission.
I do notice that it upshifts a touch soon sometimes amd then needs to downshift again . But all modern autos do that . They are trying to keep the rpm’s as low as possible for fuel economy. My last 4 new trucks have all been fords, starting with a 2010 f150, then a 2013, then a 2016 .. then a 2019 super duty f250 gas v8 . These all had 6 speed autos .. amd they all shifted similarly to the Toyota . Always eager to get to the highest gear possible. It is a bit annoying sometimes, but I’ve come to accept it with modern autos. The fact that the v6 in the Tacoma makes it hp and torque at higher rpm’s does make for more shifting than a v8 would require … but it is what it is .
Overall, I think the Tacoma shifts nicely and predictably.

Agree. I've had mine about a month now and have around 700 miles on it. I don't find anything objectionable about the transmission. Let's just hope it stays that way as it "learns" how I drive!
