Help with Overhaul Engine Gasket Kit

I recently wrecked my 2006 Tacoma V6 4WD. I need to replace my front end. Since the front of the truck is removed I thought it would be the ideal time to fix the timing cover oil seep and replace the seals I come across.

I decided to fix it myself cause no one wants to work on a smashed truck. I wish I didn't smash it but I did. I do think it can be fixed. No frame damage. Truck was running after the impact. IDK....Maybe I am making a mistake trying to fix it.

I ordered a complete gasket kit 04111-0P071 and Toyota does not provide an inventory list in the box. I called 3 Toyota dealerships and they all told me I'm just supposed to know whats supposed to be in the box due to my experience as a mechanic. I have no real experience as a mechanic.

Its been a minute since I did this but I hope this helps you know where to start for part numbers. I put a question mark next to ones im not sure of and if im wrong someone please correct me.

Also as you take things off it will be come more apparent what gaskets go where. You can see the old gasket and compare it with what you have on hand

Is 16326-31020 #28 or #29 on the diagram?

so then 16325-31010 is the other #28 or #29?

16326-31020 came with a part number....
16325-31010 is it #F or #G in the picture?

Which part it is in the diagram will be apparent when you take the housing and thermostat out. One is for the thermostat and one is for the housing itself, so compare the two and you will see the differences in the gaskets that are already in there.

 

Does it matter which is #28 and which I use for #29?

I hear ya that I'll compare them as I pull them. But I'm still clueless as to the names of some of these things. I fear I won't realize that a part I pulled off can come apart more and theres a gasket in there I should know about.

I'm trying to sike myself up to do this job. My biggest fear is my dad getting pissed off that I didn't do my homework when he asks "which gasket do you need" and I answer "lets take an educated guess", He's gonna lose his shit on me that I need to know these things before starting a project and I agree I should know things I don't and I'm trying to learn. Thanks for the help.

 

I dont know if it matters but they are different so I wouldn't mix them up. The thermostat comes out separate from the housing so don't worry about mixing up the two. Take the thermostat off first and see which it is, and tell your dad to chillax.

When I count the actual number of things that came in the box I get 78
When I count the number of gaskets on my chart I get 75
I have 3 more gaskets then I think I need.

Any ideas Why?

 

Are you trying to replace the head gasket proactively because you have a 2006? Otherwise you don’t need to take the heads off to reseal the timing cover. I’d say you are overthinking the part number component. Just get to work, take pics of the process and match gaskets/seals you remove to the new ones.

 

For a couple gasket sets in my kit I remember getting an extra one, such as for the injectors.

I was only going to replace the head gaskets if I noticed a problem with my timing chain. I'd like to avoid taking the timing chain off but if I noticed any play in the chain I was gonna replace it and do the head gaskets. #18 and #19 on the diagram I'd like to avoid as well. I should watch a video on the valves today. I should say I was really hoping to expand my knowledge base by purchasing the complete kit. I thought for sure I'd learn what each seal is and where it goes by having the whole kit.

Still over thinking but bare with me one time.

Whats are the chances that I start to remove pieces. I remove the dipstick tube but before today I did not realize the dip stick has a seal (#37 on the diagram). Is there any chance I might have not noticed that there was a seal there? Is there a chance it would fall off without me noticing as I take the dipstick tube out. Would that have lead me to reinstalling the dipstick tube without the seal? Could that result in an oil leak?

Now I know what a dip stick is, but until today, I did not realize there's a seal. Now that I know theres a seal when I go to remove the dipstick I'll be sure to locate the seal and replace it with the one that matches.

I know I know.....So what I'm looking for in a response is to verify my suspicion.

"Every thing that comes together in a truck has a gasket between." Are there any times that's not true? Or everything gasket every time....is that the rule?

Or maybe another helpful response would be "There is no way you would not notice a part you remove has a seal. The seals are absolutely obvious every time and no one every has had that mistake happen so why do you think it'll happen to you?" I don't know, I don't these things. Thus over thinking.....sorry......

Can you confirm or deny this next thought?

If I mess up doing the timing that I will permanently mess up my truck in a way I won't be able to fix without replacing the whole engine?

What's a fatal mistake doing this job? Are there any?

I seen Toyota still sells a new engine 1GR-FE for $20K. I'd like to avoid that route.

Still over thinking? I'm sorry, I'm planning to tackle this job next week or two. I'm obviously procrastinating but I need peace of mind and I don't think I'll be able to start till I understand this kit.

Get a mechanic to do it? They all told me NO already. I'm my only hope.

 

If youre overthinking this much and don't understand a gasket kit you might not be ready to take on replacing the timing components or headgasket. Just an opinion, not that you cant do it but it will be all uphill and every step will be a learning experience.

Whatever you take off if there's supposed to be a gasket there just look at the two mating pieces. Either the gasket is on surface A or surface B, if not then it probably fell off. Any part that comes in contact with coolant or oil will have a gasket or sealant applied to keep the liquid in.

If the timing is off your engine will either run like crap or damage itself depending on how far off but its easy to check as there are timing marks that all need to line up. There will be some slack in the chain, there is a spec as to how much slack is acceptable.

Re sealing the timing cover will require like 1/4 of the gaskets this kit gives you. If you do not have coolant loss I would not worry about the head gaskets right now.

They wont work on a wrecked truck because no telling if they fix the one thing if you wont blame them for something else breaking unrelated to the work and liability.

 

Yeah I agree this is an uphill battle.

I just cant believe there was no inventory list in the box.

When I call Toyota Parts dept. their answer is "your just suppose to know whats in the box."

I'll most likely give up.....Can you do me one more favor?

Can you tell me if one of the gaskets in the pictures is my oil drain plug gasket? After looking at pictures of it online I'd swear this kits is missing mine. If it's there I'm sure I'll figure out which on it is so just a yes or no will be fine. If the answer is yes then I'll most likely give up, but if you don't see it either I feel justified wanting an inventory list.

What you have bagged as K looks like the oil plug gasket. Hard to tell but it should be flat, metal and blue.

Resealing the timing cover is not terribly difficult, I would say the trickiest part is lining up the oil pump gear with the crank or maybe properly driving in the front crank seal.

The parts department most likely does not know themselves whats in the box or what its for. They are parts monkey's not mechanics, but they are sort of right. A gasket kit like this is meant for someone with the know how for pulling the engine out and cracking it open. Not a novice job.

Im big DIY so I would never say its impossible to do, no one has touched my truck since 2008 except for tires, regearing and recall work. There are a couple how to guides on this board and there was a whole video on how to do head gaskets on youtube.

 

Not a chance I’d skip doing the head gaskets on an ‘06 when you already have new ones, and are going that far already.

Is it that certain that the Head Gaskets will fail eventually?

I'm willing to go that far but it's scary and no possible answers to my questions from Toyota is maddening.

I still need a name for #20 #25 #31 #35 so I can look them up. #35 for example, how I am expected to find that info. They just float by themselves on the diagram with no reference to connect to another part. I'm baffled. Thanks if anyone knows.

 

I updated my list, This list certainly helped me so I don't see why this wouldn't help someone else.

I should probably not do this job but I don't think I'll be able to stop myself.

I've figured out I have an extra gasket that is not pictured on the diagram.
