I wouldn't count on a flash type tune for quite some time, if at all. The new techstream process for flashing is changing on newer vehicles.

Agreed it may not be doable on a laptop like VF. But a HHT would be nice

The V6 ZR2 has cylinder deactivation. I don't know what you consider fuel efficient for a high profile off road vehicle, but mine does about 15% better than my second gen Taco did.

Next model is coming with the 3.0 Duramax tho. Those things are wildly efficient, and going to be the base option.

Chevy has another v8 gasser coming...I don't think we are talking about the same truck. The whole talk was chevy isn't ditching the V8 gasser yet last month

I was responding to the person who said the ZR2 is not fuel efficient. Keep talking V8s.

I thought we were talking about the Tundras fuel mileage vs other full size trucks. Regardless of engine type the tundra is still the worst. What is it about that truck that makes it get such shitty mileage?

I just heard the 2024 is a 2.4 litre turbo 4. No manual available. Who would ever buy that. may as well be a yugo

I dont mind the 2.4 turbo, I just want it paired with the 6spd. And if it comes in DCLB thats even better

The dealer here is advertising this year Tacoma's as the last of the v6s. The only transmission they have heard of so far is an 8-speed auto. the guy didn't think we would see a manual if that is the auto, and certainly not on the hybrid.

I wouldn’t believe anything a dealer lets on about it. I worked for a Ford dealer for nearly a decade and the amount of information they let slip was nil. I imagine Toyota is even more guarded. Speculation is all they have, and it’s to move current inventory. You can’t sell what you don’t have.

The reliability of diesels decrease when the gov't requires dodads and thingamajiggers to pass EPA compliance (DEF systems). The reliability of gas engines decreases with the introduction of cylinder deactivation. At this point I'm almost thinking a fricken turbo would have a better shot at being reliable. Not really, but this shit is frustrating.

Doesn’t seem like a widespread problem, but that’s warranty work if I ever heard it. Better than some other platforms’ issues these days (3.0 Ecodiesel, for example).

True for any type of engine. Luckily, American and Japanese autos can look to German autos for lessons learned since they’ve been doing all this for decades already. I’m not a huge fan of cylinder deactivation because it leads to lifter failure, same way that engine start stop leads to a litany of issues depending on implementation. Luckily, most of this stuff can be deactivated with a gateway module and and forgotten about moving forward.

Turbos are reliable as long as you don’t go installing tuning devices / tunes. Even unreliable turbo engines (Subaru) don’t fail because of the turbo, they fail because Subaru can’t design a reasonably reliable engine. My ex’s NA 2.5 Outback was more problematic than my knocking FA20DIT WRX.

If you want reliable, get a T4R before the refresh. Its underpowered, not economical, or advanced, but it’ll run forever.

I hope you're right about the turbo. I hope the next gen tacoma and tundra are reliable. I didn't have good luck w/ the new GM.

Toyota is using variable speed turbos to decrease wear and heat. It's not spinning all the time at 100% like a traditional turbo.
