Locker Anytime Mod for Dummies 2005+

I got it to work! I took off the vampire tap and it did not puncture through the wires ‍♂️ got it working now. Thanks for write up.

OK getting the relay light lets you know that the switch and relay are working. That's good. Was the locker working well before the mod? I know mine can be sluggish without frequent use. Assuming the locker is working, things to try are driving in figure 8's in a parking lot while switching the locker on an off, or jack up both rear tires and spin them by hand to try an get the locker to go in. My locker works better after some exercise.

Hey guys, wanted to share something I've been working on for a little bit. Thanks to @jsi for the detailed write-up, super easy to follow and extremely helpful.

When I saw the mod, I started looking into the relays and saw that they make a PCB socket for the Omron relay that's now in use for this mod. Got me thinking that it may be fun to design a PCB to make the mod "easier", which led me to design this:



It holds the relay, and uses screw terminals to connect all of the wires. Plus, I added a solder jumper that enables a couple terminals for a safety switch. Nothing fancy, just interrupts the ground to the relay. Here it is all assembled, and then installed:



I 3d printed a little backer for the board and it's stuck to the locker control module with some 3M mounting tape. Works great in the garage, have yet to take it for a drive. I omitted the safety switch, but the option is there if I need it.

I'll be the first to say this was totally unnecessary since this is already a really easy mod to do, but it was fun and I'm happy with how it came out.

Thanks! Fun project. I just took it for a drive and tested, the locker definitely engaged. I also saw a few lights come on, like the ABS Off light and RSCA. I assume that's expected?

I've got two more of the boards, minimum order with the board house was three. I'm unlikely to need a second, so you're more than welcome to one.

 

That board has potential. I looked into doing something similar. With a slight modification you could mount the diode on the board and use a less expensive relay. Those Omron relays are nice but spendy.

I'm done selling relays. If you want to pickup the baton and run with it, be my guest.

 

so whos going to 3D print one of these you can plug your stock plug into and have the leads and grounds ready?

 

After my read through the thread when I started this, it certainly seemed like you covered the vast majority of people that were going to do this mod by now (almost 10 years!). My setup doesn't make things a huge amount easier anyway, so I'm unlikely to start supplying these. Just figured I'd get the extras out there rather than collect dust.

@jsi looked into the connector if you go back a few pages, and it looks like he struck out. It'll be very hard (impossible?) to make anything plug and play without the female connector.

 

Like arhelion said, I reached out to the plug supplier to see if they could supply them. The short answer is the female plug is unobtainium. Since every plug on the truck is unique to prevent assembly mistakes my guess is the female plug was only ever made as part of the 4wd module. I'm pretty sure it could be done with a 3D printer and I'd love to see someone do it.

 

Hello I ordered the relay from mouser and it looks like it already has a diode installed can anyone confirm?

 

That sure looks like a diode. Hard to tell from the picture, is it black with a white stripe around one end?

 

It looks more like a light gray stripe around it on the pin 8 side

 

That's a diode and it looks to be correctly installed.

 

So I should be good to go? I shouldn’t have to solder one in?

This is the correct part, so there is no soldering involved. The "D" in the

Omron LY2N-D2 DC12 stands for diode

Is the locking rear diff strong enough to use this mod and use it as a drift mode? None of the traction control settings really let it have fun but a locked diff would help.
