Not much different, smaller jobs can also leave a vehicle immobile like the ICM on another Corvette I had. It was kind of late and I couldn't get it tested until the next day, only to play scavenger hunt and find an OEM replacement as well locally.

Only difference with opening up an engine is using rags and painter's tape to mark/label/block off areas where you want to keep debris from falling in.

It's just a pain working through the wheel well and the edges of the engine bay to do timing work and change seals and pumps. It's not quite so bad on 4 bangers but my Maximas 3.5L V6 was a nightmare to work on.

I'll take em if you want to part with em.

I still want to SAS but the timing isn't right so I might as well make the truck a lil less rowdy

Hm that's interesting, I hadn't considered that. I just googled it and 5VZ is 9.6:1, but I guess that makes a big difference?

In any case it seems like the 5VZ and UZ engines have a lot less issues with head gaskets and oil burning than the 3RZ and 1FZ.

I do like the look of the 4th and 5th gen Maximas. IIRC @CS_AR has a lot of experience with those.

95-97 5VZ have some head gasket issues, they switched gasket designs in 98 or 99 I think but easy enough to swap for the newer MLS gaskets and she's all good again.

I've had 4th gen and 5th gen maxis. I liked the 4th gen the most, indestructible and the engine was money. The 5th was kinda a pain

I thought most of those failed under warranty and/or were replaced anyway with a service campaign. Apparently mine has a used junkyard engine in it anyway. I never did figure out where it was sourced from. The original owner apparently paid $2500 all-in back in early 2020 but didn't get documentation.

I think it was bad enough there was a recall for some of them right? Probably used the same material as the notorious 3.0l gaskets

I've heard the 3.5 had timing chain issues, but the 3.0 was pretty bombproof, like up there with a Camry of the same era but more fun to drive.

Nissan completely lost the plot in the 2000s though, at least with their sedans and small SUVs.

I can't remember the exact cause. Toyota seems to have issues with head gaskets in the first few model years. It happened with the 05-06 4.0s too.

You can tell what gaskets it has because they stick out between the heads and block. It wasn't like the 3.0 where every engine would be affected. The 3.0 could be fixed with a better exhaust crossover, then it wouldn't blow even the stock gaskets.

I’d heard that the cats going bad could create heat and blow the HGs toward the rear of the engine. I’m not sure if the 3.4 still had that issue though.

it was mostly the way the stock crossover trapped heat in the rear cyls

The 6.4l powerstoke is known for melting pistons in cyl 7/8 for similar reasons because the 1400+ EGTs from regens lol

Damn, I stay away from my table for a week and it really needed filling.

    Tons of evaporation.
