I'd use a large bore DBW Bosch or GM body if it were me, they're both nice and thin. It's common for guys to use Ford style ones though, which is annoying but I guess they're super easy to configure and wire.

 

The idea is to use LS throttles for big power. But the stock ecu runs this engine perfectly fine till you get to stupidly large cams.

 

Fuck that intake is tall as hell, but I like those cast manifolds, if you're gonna have cast, might as well have em close to the block.

 

The headers are amazing. Like seriously. The casting quality is insane. And they’re toight to the block

 

I didn't even know it was a thing, only to end up working with and promoting him after a few years.

Half a tube gets the whole engine done if you do proper beads. And you need seal packing for the coolant jackets

I've picked it out of strainers and whatnot when other people have worked on their shit, I try not to overdo it.

 

I almost bought a 2000 Xterra with the VG33. It looked like kind of a nightmare to work on though with all the vacuum lines. I think they're pretty similar reliability-wise, but the 5VZ is a lot cleaner design. I mean, Nissan was still using a distributor in 2004 lol.

 

He doesn’t over do it. He just spreads it by hand where I leave the bead before assembly. The race engine had no signs of excessive sealant his way. My way just looks cleaner. The race engine ran ~13hrs of endurance racing with a bent rod before it blew lol. 2ar trough. He doesn’t race the GR anymore. The extra torque just kills tires. The 2ar was on pace to win before the kaboom

 

The VG engines wipe the floor with the VZ for internal component strength but they're much less technically advanced and without boost they're much lower output.

 

Hm I didn't know they were stronger internally. Of course that doesn't always mean more reliable.

The early Xterras and Frontiers are under-appreciated IMO though. They have really tough drivetrains for a compact truck.

 

They don't have longevity issues and I'm sure there are many more VG engines in the wild than VZ, they were in everything... like everything. The VG was Japan's first mass produced V6 engine. They're just kinda weak, the most common VG30 to find makes 160hp. The VG33 makes like 175, and the VG33ER makes 190ish. The VG30ET made 205hp in 1984 though, that was cooking. And my buddy and I have sucessfully built a VG33 that survived and is still running at 650hp and 663ftlb of torque. We used all stock bottom end parts which is the amazing bit. We did need ARP head studs and some Isky cams to get enough flow and hold the head down at 30psi though

 

I haven’t heard much about VGs honesty. It seems like the VQs and of course the RB25s get all the hype in the Nissan world.

They're just not very interesting. TBH I'd rather have an RB too. But I would take a VG over a VQ any day if it came to building a power machine. If it was a contest to make over 550hp and spend the least amount of money I am confident I could do it cheaper with a VG than an LS. Because any junkyard complete VG will cost me around 120 bucks and the stock 80s Nissan computers are tunable so I can use the garbage pulled out with it and some injectors, old stock turbo manifolds and a large t3/t4 and you're there for under the cost of a used LS anymore.

Ironically, I remember reading about the knock sensors being one of the biggest issues with the early Xterras lol. I've always had a soft spot for them ever since my dad almost bought one new back in 04. I think a 14-15 Pro4X with a 5 speed would also be a good buy.
