The new keys are combined with a microchip. I don't think thieves bother with regular keys anymore

Meh, all they'd care about is access to the interior and putting it in neutral. The immobilizer can be handled later.

There are thieves with tow trucks but that's only a fraction. If you eliminate opportunists you're way less likely to get it stolen

Wait, you think "opportunists" will be the ones walking around with this kind of tech?

I knew this was able to be done. I installed remote starts for 15 years. The companies that would make bypass modules for the factory immobilizers would spend months. At some point years working to crack 80+ bit encryptions. I always wondered why they couldn’t just figure out the communications through the CAN networks and just tell the ECU/ECM that the correct signal was received. Honestly surprised it took thieves this long. CAN network been out since at least 2004.

If they can bypass the start button fob they can bypass the physical key as well. Just because it’s a physical thing doesn’t give it some magical properties.

Vehicles have only been stolen since the advent of remote starters. So stop buying cars.

Pfftt. Wireless fob hacking is so 2020

    https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2023/04/car-thieves-hacking-the-can-bus.html

hacking through the CAN Bus is the new hotness. I bet the fancy headlights will have a CAN connection and easily accessed through the wheel well.

    it’s being done now

That’s mainly due to the cars not having any sort of security / immobilizer.

You’re right, buy an hoopty that can be started with a flat blade screwdriver.
Anything can be defeated, use common sense, and enjoy your life.

Immobilizers don't work either. Bypassing the chip in the fob is easy.

    This.
