Anyone else had a dealer sneak in the 2012 4.0 SAI replacement as part of other service and kinda have you pay for it?

Took my 2012 TRD to the dealer a little early for a scheduled service after the CEL and traction system light came on. I asked them to check the codes and they tried to do $600 of work as if the warning lights coming on had two causes; “the EGR valve and a bad gas cap gasket”. I said no, let’s clear the code and I’ll put a gas cap on it and we’ll see. I get there and THEY had put the gas cap on and charged me a ridiculous amount to clear the code. Shady, but whatever, I can take it elsewhere in the future.

Two months later I look under the hood and there’s all this brand new hardware in there. A little googling later and I’m able to ID it as the SAI replacement…which I’d never heard of.

So did I paid them to fix a code issue caused by my stock SAI failing? They did not record the SAI work on the invoice and if I’d just gone along with what they wanted to do, it would’ve been $600 when it sounds like it should’ve been free. Curious how SAI replacements have gone down for others who were clueless about it.

Something screwy going on there for sure, 2nd gens don't even have an EGR valve.
Depending on date of first use, it could fall in the 10 year extended warranty on the Secondary Air Injection System for 2012 V6 trucks in which case it should be a free repair.
Most 2012 trucks will be out of the 10 year warranty coverage by now though.
Either way they should not have done a repair like that without customer approval.

Youre right - not EGR, although that shows up on my test results, it was a pass (could mean it doesn’t apply, too). So maybe I heard him wrong -the evap system is listed as a fail on the “monitor summary”. The “test results report” had fails for Small Leak, Gross Leak and Purge VSV Opened.
