This Kohler was heavily passing oil into the carb throttle body. Customer asked me to check on the crank case vent for plugging.

Oddly enough there was no filter material. Someone else was in this motor and didn't bother to install the filter.

Any recommendations for a mower for 4-5 acres ? I was looking at a riding mower 42-46” deck but thinking it wouldn’t be enough.

A compact tractor with a 6' finish mower.

If you had more obstacles, I'd recommend a zero turn with a 6' deck.

That real estate looks pretty bumpy. A compact tractor with bigger tires might not beat you to death as much as a zero turn mower.

That’s what I was thinking. It has always been done with a walk behind brush hog LOL but I’m not gonna do that. We do rent and just moved here so don’t want to invest a crazy amount but I’m thinking a zero turn would work good enough

They said it was previously done 2-3 times a year, however I would prefer to keep it low for less ticks and for my dogs/ chickens. We have gotten so much rain that it’s growing really fast. I also need to mow the grass/weeds in the front yard which is separate than the pasture.

I'd go with the compact tractor and a brush hog if you want to cut it less often, say monthly or less, or a finishing mower if you're willing to cut it at least bi-weekly. But that is a time-consuming job. I'd estimate it would take at least 3 hours to cut 5 acres. A better option might be to turn a hand full of goats lose out there; then, you could just hit the high spots with a weedwhacker.

I'm on 5ac, and I use a tractor with brush hog for 3.5ac of field about once every six weeks and the finish mower for 1.5ac of lawn around the house bi-weekly.

do you have any recommendations on a compact tractor and brush hog ? I have thought about goats too, but I feel like I would need a ton of them for that much space. A lot of my neighbors have goats and other livestock.

The owners manual from my mower includes this chart. It might help you to balance mower size vs how much time you want to spend sitting on it . . . ;)

I love my Kubota BX for work on my 4 acre land, but that's with lot's of trees and hills. Only about 2 acres is grass so I just use my belly mower for that with the front loader and back hoe taken off. Great thing is that it literally takes only 2 minutes to take off the front loader and the same for the back hoe.
I couldn't suggest any others nor would I talk bad about them simply because I don't have experience with them. But my research before purchasing my Orange tractor is simply that....it's kinda like the toyota of tractors?!? IMHO.

In your case specifically, I don't think an investment like that is needed. I wonder if you can get away with it with a zero turn (maybe cost your around 5k). A compact tractor and brush hog would at least cost you twice that much no?

I have a Kioti; Kubota's are good. As I think you said, you are just renting. I would look for something used. Tractors and even Zero-turns are a serious investment.:spending: I love having a tractor and would like a zero-turn, but they are not a good short-term investment. The market of buyers and sellers is typically much smaller than other markets. So getting rid of one might be more difficult than selling your car.
You might also check around to see how much it'd cost to have someone else like me come in with their brush hog to knock it down for you. A few hundred for someone to come in every other month and cut it through the growing season could be worth it in the time savings.
Though personally, I'd try the goats first, six should be plenty, and that lot is already fenced. Buy a few water buckets and supplemental grain, and you're ready to start. It'd be a lot cheaper on the front end, and if it doesn't work out, you can sell or butcher the goats easily enough. Then buy whatever equipment you want to use. Another option before buying would be to rent the equipment you want to use and see how well it works. I think the field will be too rough for a zero-turn, but you really have to get out and walk or ride it to see for sure.

Some serious hackery today. I'll preface this with, I did not dream up this mess, I only had the welder and welded it together.

Friends mower (an old ass MTD or sears) has been around the block for way too many years. Apparently the muffler kept falling off. This was her brother-in-law's "fix". So, I just welded it!

You can grab a hold of the muffler and shake the whole damn thing; it ain't going nowhere

While I drug my MIG welder and gas bottle over there I found a hole in the deck to patch. This is my half-assed attempt with the only metal she had laying around.

Soon as I went to smooth off the "welds" a couple more holes formed. Gonna have her pull the deck off in the Fall and let me really patch it.

I was laughing my ass off when I seen the contraption I had to weld. I will say though, if the muffler comes off the entire mower is now junk!

Welp, serviced the small JD lawn tractor yesterday. While I was doing it I did the JD quick oil change conversation kit

Now oil changes are a lot cheaper!

for a rental property possibly having a highschooler do it with dads equiptment could be a way. weigh out the costs of investing and doing nothing yourself. just an idea.
