Dealer won’t outright sell, trade in required!?

Long story short, we saw a new Taco TRD Pro sitting out front of a Toyota dealer here in NorCal, when asked to purchase they stated it cannot outright be purchased without a trade in. Rather asking details we left. I’ve never heard of this. Any ideas?

 

Greed. They can make more money from selling the trade in. Sounds like a place I wouldn't want to buy from.

 

They went from selling 400 units a month to probably 40. Trades are another source of revenue for dealers. Is it right? No. Can they do it? Absolutely. Are there other dealers out there? 100%.

 

Don't buy from them

 

Understandable and it pisses me off, but at the same time I understand they’re also probably trying to recover as with everyone else and need all means to do so, hence not wasting a breath and leaving.

 

Just buy a shitbox off Craigslist and trade it in. Might even save money on the deal

 

Quit your gawking and keep a walking…..

Find another dealer.

 

Just curious, what were you driving. Maybe they saw dollar signs and were just being greedy...
Most of the Toyota dealers I've been seeing in the Mid Atlantic have a bunch of over priced used vehicles and not much for new eventory..

I’d contact corporate about it and never go back to that dealership!

 

Red flag and I wouldn’t sweat it. Corporate would have done something about market adjustments if they truly cared. Control the things you can control.

If they gotta resort to that tactic to make money, it means they aren’t good at making money and won’t give you a favorable deal on the truck in the end.

Take your $$$ elsewhere. Plenty other options out there.

 

Over the last two years, I have heard from a few friends about their transactions where the dealer would not sell them a brand new vehicle without a trade-in.

 

They sound like a bunch of jerks, but it’s a free country and the are free to alienate customers.

 

Same thing happened to me a little over a year ago at a Dodge dealer. They didnt want to sell me a new Challenger outright because of the shortages. 2 months later they called me and said they would do it now

 

If the OP is anywhere near where I live, we have idiots on craigslist trying to charge $10,000 for Toyota Corollas from the 1990s.

 

Wait- buy private and trade it in? That makes financial sense. You are never going to get what you paid for at a dealer like that.

Go buy a 500$ car on facebook and bring it in, is what they were getting at.

 

But people do by them… market driven by demand!

 

No I saw it, you are still going to be the loser in the end at that one dealer.

 

So is he saying that on their books they can take any car, if that’s the case, then I’m mistaking what I thought you meant. Sorry!

 

Friday came very early this week.

Simple solution, go to a different dealer.
