Yesterday I learned that these have a 9.25” rear diff — almost as strong as a 100 series. @CS_AR It seems like Nissan really overbuilt their running gear in this era.

If I wasn't always in such a hurry when I'm on I-49 near the Rudy exit, there is a back road from Rudy through Oliver Springs to get to I-40 to Ft. Smith. Some guy on that road has 20 or 30 xTerras around his garage. It looks like he has an obsessions with them. If I get time, I'll make a drive through there.

It's part of the reason why Nissan RWD cars were so strong, Hitachi built them some badass differentials. The Jatco automatic transmissions were never more than okay though, and the FS5W71C 5 speed that would have been in that is a good transmission but needs rebuilds about ever 150k because they eat 2nd and 3rd gear synchros like candy

Oh so Jatco made the autos too, not just the infamous CVTs? I never knew that.

They seem really well suited to the local terrain.

Nissan owns Jatco and has used them for their traditional autos well into the 2000s, they may still on trucks I don't know. I know the Cummins Titan got an Allison trans because Nissan couldn't provide anything strong enough.

I think that if I had one with an auto, I would send it to Level10 in NJ for the bulletproof treatment. The G3x guys in the east coast used them to build transmissions for the drag strip.

Sometimes they got it right though, the Jatcos in the 4th gen Maximas were indestructible.

They are. There are a few around. I see guys from Oklahoma coming over with them. The bypass around the giant mudhole up from Union school is tight. An X would have no problem. Most of the tight trails and bypasses around mud holes were cut for a Jeep TJ size vehicle.

It’s just weird how Nissan kept using a distributor up until 2004 on the VG33. A lot of their issues stemmed from that as well. I mean i thought a dizzy was a little out of date on my 97 LC, but 2004 is just insane.

The VG30 and VG33 distributor kept things simple and low cost, the base of the dizzy holds an optical pickup crank angle sensor so the ignition and injection is all digitally controlled, but instead of multiple coil packs they just need one. There were never any issues associated with them, it's a pretty failure proof design. The RB used the same crank angle sensor with coil packs on each cyl... but that was spendier.

@Ozark_RegCab If you are interested in an X, I would get into a group with some knowledgeable owners. There you will learn all of the little inside secrets to let them run forever.

It like replacing the plastics heater Ts on a 100 before they break. Or the 7-pin mod to disable CDL in 4LO. Having a bridge kit for when the fuse block under the hood breaks. Or how to keep from breaking the fan shroud when replacing the rack.

Me and my kids learned so much cool stuff from this site 13 years ago, that it still carries me today.

I'm sure there is an Xterra specific forum.
