Hello my upper left TW members,

I have the potential to move back to Everett, Washington for work and was seeking input on areas to think about living, etc. Position would be in the vicinity of Paine Field.

I've lived and worked in Bellevue and Renton in the past and most of my family is from Federal Way & Everett/Marysville so I'm familiar with the area to some degree. I know about the absurd property values and taxes, socioeconomic issues, etc. It's just been a while since I've lived there though which is why I'm reaching out.

    Any advice?

Thanks, we'll see how it plays out. Not quite to the stage to make that decision yet, but making a final pre-job offer trip up there on Thursday-Sunday to scope out the facility and the surrounding area. (Plus shred Bellingham on Friday ).

Housing costs and being relegated back to apartment life and downsizing from a cozy but comfortably sized house (@2.xx %) here in UT for at least a little while is a huge hang-up for me unless their salary offer is huge.

Yeah, that mortgage rate and stuff would be a big loss. Just gotta weigh it all, and whether or not you really wanna be back in WA.

Could you rent the house for enough to pay the mortgage?

Yeah, I could cover it with a renter. But will likely need the equity from the appreciated SLC market to afford a place in WA. Not trying to put down a smaller down amount then pay out the nose on the monthly.

Oh, was just thinking you'd rent/apartment it over here. Wasn't thinking about buying... cause... buying sucks right now :(

    Oof!

Welcome back. I work in the same area and live just south.

The traffic has gotten infinitely worse than when you left and drivers doubly so since the COVID mess. No one can drive or GAF.

I would highly recommend living south of work to go against the grain of the commute. The stackups at 6.30a / 3p going with the grain are unreal. Of course, the homes to the north are a bit less expensive.

We're hoping to bolt to a more affordable area once our girls get out of school.

Thanks for the input. My sister recently moved back to Everett as well coincidentally and when I was up seeing her a few weeks ago, I def got reminded how different that area is than Utah in basically every way.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
What about out on 92 toward granite falls. When we lived in Burien we considered giving up the sound for the mountains. Any locals drive 92 to Paine lately?

It is good that you got a sample.

The area is mostly great except for all the people, like you know. But then, we were a transplant in 1996, so a contributor ourselves.

I think it'll be that way for a decent amount of time, sadly. Maybe I will rent it out for a bit, IDK, this has snowballed a little faster than I had planned. Need to really sit down and put my thoughts on paper.

I've got a phone call with a company appointed realtor tomorrow to discuss the area, so depending on how hard he laughs when I tell him my idea price range, I may have some of my questions answered. I have a good job and like my area here in Utah so really not hard pressed for a move if it's gonna put me in a bad spot.

92? The easy answer is to pull up Gmaps and look at the live traffic around commute time. It ain't gonna be pretty.

We lived for a short time in S Everett and for too long in Marysville. Granite Falls and surrounding are very nice areas, if you don't need to leave.

I'll have an eye out for it. I'm assuming you're gonna reference the thing that passed in the last 2 days?

As you and I have similar hobbies, that is def not ideal. Need to look into the particulars of that and how it potentially affects me.

I moved out of WA in 2013. I still visit the PNW at least 4-5 a year. The North end has not changed much besides more traffic everywhere, cost of living is high etc… you’ll be fine as long as you stay within a decent area. It has gotten slight rough in some areas.

Yeah, i'd be comparing a lot on the cost of living, and the commute time and what's that worth to you. Unless they are offering GOBBS more money, it really might not be worth it. I really wish you luck, man!

Looks like about an hour, which is roughly the same time, but for a shorter distance, than maps says from Mt. Vernon, etc.

"Has gotten slightly rough" omg. Understatement of the century. Parts of Seattle are literally 3rd world now.

We left 2 years ago after CHOP... I couldn't bear to watch anymore

Definitely consider how close you can find housing from work. I-5 traffic in the afternoon around Pain field is a pain.
