Typical diff howl, new one may help but may not either.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
like a light groan/whir that changes a bit as speed increases.

wow still making noise... im looking for a new pro, and would hate to have the howl. my 17 trd or had a howl, toyota installed some sound deadening panels per a TSB. the noise was gone, its not the diff, it a resonance of many noises.

Well I can get a wind noise type of howling, if I drive with the chin spoiler removed. Nothing with it back on.

There have been some diffs like yours. A few are going to sneak through when making millions of them. I'm glad that it is getting attention on your Taco.

I had a slight howl in mine that got better when I swapped the leafs, even less so when I swapped the body mounts, and seems to be gone with some BAMF hangers. I will know for sure if the weather ever warms up.

It’s funny how all these companies just replace stuff. Because no one knows how to properly set up a rear. It’s great they are replacing it but a mechanic who really knows gears could take the carrier out a few adjust the backlash and check a few things . Then re install and be on your way . As far as the truck goes
They are very good trucks . But always remember it’s a truck and it will never feel like a car

Problem is many of todays techs are part changers, only knowing how to fix an issue if it listed in a data base. Very few are hands on techs that can actually diagnose an unknown issue. Its what we've become.

You are 100% correct. They waste more time throwing parts at something than actually doing real mechanic work.

I just bought a 2023 TRD OR, have 500 miles on it now. I haven’t heard any noise from the rear differential at any speed.

There's gonna be a lot more of y'all that don't have a problem than those that do.

Dealer fixed mine today. Sent bad diff back to Toyota. The tech drove the truck and listed to the new diff on the lift no noise at all. I pick the truck up tomorrow thank god it’s fixed brand new diff

Great to hear OP! Your persistence paid off. Yes, lets hope they truly did fix the issue. My 2020 DCLB TRD Sport 4x4 does not make any rear diff noise at all. In fact with the factory highway tires on for one year it was, IMO whisper quiet. 1.5 years ago I put one size up from stock A/T tires on. Never had A/T tires before. Always Michelin defenders in the past. Went with Toyo Open Country AT3’s. There was a small, noticeable tire road noise only. Still no rear differential noise at all.

You might want to change the rear diff fluid yourself in 500 or so miles just to be sure there's no tiny metal shavings, but it's up to you. Dealer should warranty parts and labor for whatever term is stated on your receipt anyway.
