Around-town driving will feel as lethargic as if you had the 2.7 instead the 4.0, due to the tall gearing. You'll be mashing the gas pedal but but the truck will not be sending it. Apparently that's OK for like 30,000 Tacoma owners who buy the 2.7 each year, so make what you will of it.

Just the typical drop in performance and MPg’s. Can it be done? Yeah, just I’ll be somewhat shitty. Some don’t care and been on 35’s for years.

some people just need to get from a to b while occasionally moving something in the bed not worried about peak truck performance

^I used to point out a Tacoma 4x4 with the 2.7 had the second worst power-to-weight ratio of any vehicle in Toyota's lineup, second to the Prius V minivan. Then I learned there was a 2.7 4Runner, which weighs as much stock as a modded Tacoma with armor

given that sedans come with 4.10 and the Tacoma came with 3.73" on ~31" tires,
try it out and let us know what is already known.

    stock gears on 33" equals
    -zero power at altitude
    -slow at sea level
-not much torque or leverage to get up an incline
-if you put lockers as one should, why would you not regear while in there
    -RPM's probably too low
    -bad MPG
-even worse ability to handle pushing weight if you mod your truck at all; most truck mods add weight over stock
-it will stress the clutch more trying to get 35's moving, instead of simply having enough gear leverage to get moving
-most other vehicles of this nature are 4.10 or better; it's for a reason
-less power means less ability to get moving, move out of the way, or pass somebody, which means less safe
-more likelihood of someone else damaging your clutch in the event they have to drive it
I need a tire rotation. A shop worker would do it. Crappy gearing on big tires he'll probably burn the clutch
-you probably need more clamping force of an upgraded clutch to hold, due to lack of leverage, instead of simply putting the right gears in it

-cost; does it cost too much? Well then maybe you should've bought a 1st gen Taco for $7k, or 4g Runner for $10k, to have money for gears
instead of blowing your load $18k on a 2nd gen Taco that leaves much to be desired, without a single dollar left over to fix the many problems they come from the factory with, such as TOB design, 3.73 gears, etc.

or just avoid the 35's, because going from 31 to 35 suggests you do have cash,
for one, 35 costs much more than 31's

    4x4 is about adventure
which means at least go to mountains sometimes
possibly drive I-70 in CO through mountains, which is even worse if you're moving with stuff in the back or pulling a trailer
you can off road to the top of imogene pass which is 13k feet

even 5k feet altitude (the elevation of many popular places to live) the Tacoma goes from feeling crappy at sea level, to even more crappy

factory 0-60 new rated at 8.8sec
car magazines often cheat on that test with a rolling start
that is slower than a Jetta economy car
    on 31's without weight

you're gonna have a lot of other drivers on your rear bumper the whole time

I have 33's. It drives like dogshit. There's not much more that I want for this truck besides a regear and lockers. Haven't decided between 4.56 4.88
5.29 might not be an available option and rumor has it less teeth on 5.29 makes it an inherently weaker design than 4.56 or 4.88

it'd be nice to add a crawlbox/tacobox too, and manual FJ tcase

Nothing about a Tacoma on stock tire size is peak performance. Reliable? Yes. Performance? No.

You know how old school American cars were big V8, 11mpg, and only like 200hp?
    Inefficient design

the Tacoma is probably the same thing. 4.0L V6 making as little power as it does.

I assume my truck is operating as designed. O2 sensors have been replaced, does not have faults or MIL/CEL.
But with the engine running, cold (especially) or even warm idling, it smells like gas. Probably inefficient design of how the engine operating, not fully utilizing fuel.
In a shop garage, it's best not to leave it idling for that reason.

Versus other cars like a sedan, I can leave idling for long and not smell it.

part of that is physics and mapping of engine temperature control. The higher temperature you set the engine to run, the more efficiently it burns fuel. I'm not sure how that causes less reliability.
But the Tacoma, for one, I believe runs much cooler stock.
regular car engine? That shit is HOT
Tacoma engine? The engine and engine bay is surprisingly cool; you can lay on top of it

maybe the engineers did it on purpose to favor reliability over performance; but they're also the same people who designed the TOB
Then again, Toyota as a brand is always 10-15 years behind on technology versus competitors and they're plenty of other engines out there with the same years and miles on them by now without crazy issues and the same normal parts wearing out over time

I went from 35s stock gears to 35s 4.56s... If you do a lot of highway and its not all flat or downhill, your trucks going to struggle. Even on small hills the truck would have to downshift... 4.56s never happens. I wouldn't recommend stock gears and 35s. 33s is ok.

It's fine.... But it's better to regear.

It's really not that bad, and i'm at altitude.

I see this said a lot. I'm on 33s and it drives perfectly fine. It's not a race car. It's got enough torque to get me anywhere I want without much struggle. I don't know what the hell everyone is on about.

I have no problems with in town driving or picking up speed getting on the highway, what is bad is highway mpg, horrible also keep in mind Florida is mostly flat where I am couldn’t imagine on a hilly area forget it.
