I like being called well worn, with a slight patina.

 

I had this at my job which is why I retired at first opportunity. Fortunately, my wife was able to cover the health insurance so it was a no brainer for me.

Pack the truck up again for a weekend camping with WI TW folks. No 4wd needed for this trip.

Thanks, the good news my heart hasn't gotten worse. The numbers and %'s are still in the good range. Just a leaking valve. Just got to pay attention and listen to what my body is telling me.

Fun day yesterday roaming a different part of the historical district yesterday with my history buddy. Found some of the old streetcar tracks from the 1900s and the oldest grave in St. Michael’s cemetery, Jose Roig, died in 1812. Exciting stuff for some of us nerds lol.

Phoenix was a FOX-1 missile, relying on the aircraft's active radar to guide it. Can be defeated by forcing the guiding aircraft to take evasive action, and releasing a chaff cloud.

Sidewinder is a FOX-2 missile, heat seeking. Can be defeated by flares or steering it against a hotter source (like the sun).

AAMRAM is a FOX-3 missile, which has its own seeker and can go "pitbull" when it gets within range of the target. It can also utilize information provided by AWACS in getting guided to target. Difficult to defeat - can tell the difference between chaff (stationary falling target) and an aircraft. Target aircraft has to take multiple evasive actions (ground clutter distraction, shortening range by dragging down into heavier air, notching it by trying to move into a position it can't steer to get into an explosive position).

Once a modern AAMRAM has you, you're almost certainly fucked.






AAMRAMs are the shit.

As @CaptAmerica noted, each missile type has different operating parameters. Sometimes it's good to be able to shoot down your opponent from 100 miles away, but sometimes the rules of engagement (ROE) say you can't shoot until you identify hostile intent. Missiles like the Phoenix were huge and very fast but not so maneuverable. Great for the 100-mile shot, as the inbound bad guy probably won't even see it because it's going so fast. Sadly the Phoenix is no longer in active service, replaced by newer versions of the AAMRAM. The AAMRAM is fast, smart, and fairly maneuverable, whereas the Sidewinder AIM-9X is smaller, short-range, and not as fast but very maneuverable. So the AAMRAM is great for that medium-long range shot with its speed and smart tech, but in close, the AIM-9X, with its greater maneuverability, might offer a better option. Our aircraft usually carry the AAMRAM-120, the AIM-9X, and the M61 20mm cannon to give pilots all the options when needed; each weapon is intended to work better at a different range, from 100 miles to spitting distance.

I'm not sure what you'd use this for out in the desert. I don't think they cut rocks very well. I want one for cutting up small trees on wheeling expeditions. I carry a sharp axe, but a saw would be a much better tool.
