As some of you know, I'm the new owner of a 2015 Toyota Tacoma STD Sport in Barcelona Red.

I have logged on the Toyota Owers Dashboard, and there's a lot of information there including some dealer events. I can view and download the BASE equipment description.

But other than "TO V6 Tow Package - Factory" and you can eyeball that the truck has the in bed power inverter, nothing specifically sez right out there that all the necessary options were installed to support the TRD Sport decals on the truck bed.

Is there any way to confirm all the TRD Sport options are present and accounted for? :notsure:

TRD Bilstein’s, tow package, upgraded alternator, trans oil cooler, scoop. If you got them but don’t have a locker you probably got a Sport.

Sport also has a stiffer anti-sway bar and different coil spring rate.

12-15 sport likely has linear front springs instead of progressive
fake LSD simulator for the rear end which is probably simulated 8.4"

there's really not much that makes it different
yes the stickers which people can also fake it
One possible way to know for sure might be to CarFax it or run the VIN through Toyota or a dealer

I'm not sure if interior is different; mind for example has somewhat sporty seats, you might have a perforated steering wheel
and my instrument cluster looks kind of sporty
    (still a basic ass truck)
not sure if the regular "SR5" or whatever is any different from that; I imagine it is

TRD Bilstein meaning pencil-thin and weak, but painted blue and yellow

and non e-locker with actuator on rear diff due to not being an OR
Sport rear bumper is usually body paint color match, while OR is chrome, and OR has front chrome grill surround
Sport I believe is body color front grill surround; sometimes the insert is mesh, and sometimes it has black housing headlights stock

I think no rear sway bar came on 2nd gens
but yes front sway bar, which if it is a different stiffness, still highly recommended to quickly throw in dumpster

    Scoop
    Power inverter in bed
    Fogs
    Sport seats
    17” rims 265/65/17
Tow package to include cooler and upgraded alt
    Blue/yellow trd shocks
    Thicker front sway bar
    Stiffer coil springs
    3+1 rear leafs
    LSD rear end
    Taillights

Probably things I’m missing but those are obvious visuals.

    *2.5 gen
I found the Toyota dashboard to be worthless. My truck is listed as a “Tacoma 4x4 double cab v6”. Outside of the paint code no other information is listed. My truck has/had every option listed above plus several options not listed such as heated seats and a block heater to name a few.

Yes, Blue and Yellow Bilstein, I was amazed at how thin they were also. What is the test for reliance? If they are not leaking = they are good, or is there another test?

Why why, would I throw a sway bar in a dumpster?? :notsure: Sways keep the vehicle cornering more flat, which is a help to 'Sport' driving is it not :burnrubber:

Wheels are 17" >> Why were they chosen for the TRD Sport? Better fuel economy due to lower revs on the highway or something else. :notsure:

"Sport driving" aha...ha... that's about the same as saying making a sandwich makes you Gordon Ramsey...

I have an 07 TRD Sport (I know it's not a 2.5 gen but the trucks are mostly similar.) Anyone correct me if I'm wrong please, but in my opinion the TRD Sport package was mostly an appearance upgrade to the tune of slight suspension work and one or two goodies sprinkled around.

Nice truck and it Looks like a sport to me.

As for sway bar diameter I’d have to search for the difference on here but I know that it’s been talked about on more than one occasion. I could put a set of calipers on mine but I’d say it’s safe to assume you are good.

The coils have a different spring rate vs the OR. The offroads are softer, sports are stiffer. Never compared the visual difference between the two but I guess I could. I have an extra set of OR coils in my garage.

Check post number 18 here for a pretty good description of the VSC and Auto LSD here. You’ll have an auto LSD indicator in your cluster when active. Should have a button with a vehicle “losing traction” in the hub to the left of your steering wheel. Also where your inverter and fog on/off control are. My rear diff has a sticker on it but can’t remember specifically if it mentions “LSD”. Earlier 2nd gen trucks did.

The same shit everyone else has.
    It’s a Sport.

Sport package is mostly an appearance package, with the larger wheels and colormatched parts.

Also. It should have the blue w/ red/white label Hitachi shocks, not the blue/yellow Bilsteins. Off Roads have the Bilsteins.

those are also TRD sport wheels

    1. they're bad, there is no test
    2. it is a truck, it does not corner. The sway bar prevents the suspension from articulating independently
    3. there is no fuel economy. Ever. It is an inefficient engine. Economy from the wheels is marginal. They chose those wheels to try and make it look cool, probably to charge $10k more for the truck new. And to pretend it's sporty by not offering the 16's of the OR that have more sidewall flex. But 16 is not needed. Because 16 limits brake size.
The wheel does not effect revs. Overall tire diameter does. The tire size is the same.

    2nd Gen. Blue/Yellow Bilstein’s of a TRD Sport. Red Bilstein’s off a TRD Pro.

@steveo27 as we may readily see, I have the Bilsteins on the TRD Sport. They do not leak. Unless someone mentions they have a max mileage / year for replacement, I'm inclined to keep them on the truck. First pix is rear, 2nd pix is the front with coil.

Basic question: wouldn't a VIN lookup give OP all the info needed? Link to dot.gov I learned a bunch in this thread about 2nd Gens which is good stuff but couldn't the same info be found looking up the VIN?

The problem I ran into and sounds like op ran into is doing a vin search through Toyota yields little to no information, at least for some of us. The only info that came back on my search was cab size, color and drivetrain. I would have to imagine a dot search would yield the same results but they would include weight.

Prior to purchase I researched this forum and other sources for a list of trim options. That way when I made a purchase I could double check everything was there before driving of the lot in a mislabeled truck.

I believe the lack of trim info on vin searches could be the reason people get duped on purchases. I’ve seen Toyota dealerships selling mislabeled trim levels before. Seems some people (including dealers) typically rely on bedside decals for confirmation of trim level.

Yep, I see that now - thanks. I put my VIN in the dot lookup tool and there is nothing that outright designates it as a "Sport" what it does give me is the Series Code which is GRN305L which I am having trouble finding a decoder for (as others have experienced in the forum as a quick search netted a few other posts -- one example --) So it looks like one would need to Look up the VIN on the DOT website, find the Series Code in the VIN details (or find the data plate on the truck and get the series code (as mentioned in the linked thread), then find a dealer or an online tool that can decode the series code. JEASH.

Data I was able to export to excel from https://vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder/Decoder

    1.jpg
Edit: if anyone can find out where a list of the 7th digit code meanings are I would appreciate it. My research indicates the 7th digit in the Taco's VIN is the one that will designate it as a TRD Sport, OR, PRO etc... but I cannot get to that grain of data since the 7th digit just leads to a list of more codes. Does anyone have any info on how to decode the 7 digit alpha-numeric below? Reference doc attached.
