But what if I told you the truck that doesn’t look like a truck is actually more of a truck than the truck that does look like a truck?

Why because it has more power? Have you been in a rivian? I have. It's a computer on wheels. It's acceleration feels like I'm on the monorail at Disneyland.

I own one. It has a higher towing capacity (almost double), a higher payload (40% higher than my access cab, 60% higher than my double cab), higher ground clearance (50% more), etc. It is very much a computer in wheels, annoyingly so sometimes, but that doesn’t make it not a truck.

I bet the price of the top 4th gen Tacomas with the turbo and hybrid engine starts to creep into Rivian Territory. I think the cheapest Rivian is around $73K. If you can still get $10K of tax breaks that puts it at $63K. After you save 10K on fuel it may actually start to make sense financially.

It definitely does. I might have more torque depending on the year but probably not.

2018, but the torque is plenty. Didn’t buy it to win any competitions, only to do the job

To be honest if I could have this level of performance from a diesel in the same size truck I’d probably own one. My 2500 was great but I didn’t enjoy the size of the truck for a daily driver.

Exactly. All this talk about more horsepower and more torque and more payload capacity and more towing capacity. That's not why we buy tacomas.

What's the reliability on that rivian? My boss bought one and sold one. Had another employee drive it to Sacramento from Utah. The guy got half way through Nevada and it wouldn't take a charge. Ah ha ha. My boss had to drive out to the middle of Nevada and pick up the employee and then Rivian had to tow the dang thing to Sacramento. Ah ha ha ha! I'll take a tacoma anyway of the week

Perhaps. For not buying Tacomas for all those reasons they sure come up in a lot of complaints about the truck. The Tacoma isn’t a bad truck, I’ve owned several, it just wasn’t enough truck for my needs.

No issues with mine on any trips over the last 6 months. It’s been as reliable as any of the rest of my trucks.

Let me know it's reliability in 10 Years. I got a 2005 taco about to turnover 300k miles.

Not based on the reliability but I don’t think anyone buying a Rivian today plans on keeping it for 10 years. Like you mentioned, it’s a computer on wheels and you can only do so many software updates before new hardware is needed for new features or more important to most, more range.

That’s honestly not concern of mine, I’m always swapping vehicles well before ten years.

Why not just get both for your needs? Neither has to be the newest iPhone to serve a purpose if it works for your needs. Unless the newest iPhone is more important than your actual needs. Seems simple enough.

I don’t have the room or really desire for two vehicles. The R1T is kind of a jack of all trades solution that mostly works for most of my wants. Fast, handles well, off roads well, tows well (minus range), etc. Not the best at any of them but the best at doing all of them in one package.
