Will do! I was given a quote for $500 for a spot fix, or $1,300 to do it the right way.

i was going to with the $500 option but figured what the hell. So I did it the right way, all stickers and trim removed, painted, blended and the entire bed side clear coated. So hopefully that entire panel is good now.
Ended up being $1,500, but my GEICO claims adjuster said he doesn’t think I’ll have a problem being reimbursed minus the $500 deductible.

That of course means nothing until I get a check, but I will for sure update here when I have more info. I just submitted photos and a receipt.

The word from dealerships I’ve spoken to is that given the volume of issues, and the existing service campaign that includes several other Toyota vehicles already, it’s only a matter of time before Tacomas are added to the list. The more people submit reports to Toyota corporate, the faster this will happen. Once added, anyone who paid out of pocket for a covered issue should likely be able to submit a claim for payment retroactively.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's the way it plays out. I'll be keeping my receipts for damn sure. I reported it to corp and they told me to kick rocks.

Agreed. I think this would be the most likely outcome. I think Toyota has to meet some sort of threshold before they make it official. I really do hope Toyota does the right thing here asap. I can empathize as a 040 owner. So far my Texas built 2020 has been flawless. However, this issue could have very well been an exclusive Texas built Tacomas instead of Mexico produced Tacomas. Count your blessings if all is good with yours.

This reminds me of the leaf spring issue on the 2nd gen that they eventually had a recall for after a few years of people reporting it. Maybe it is a threshold thing

    Should change the poll to,

Has your white paint failed on your Tacoma?
    Yes, still peelling
Yes, got it repainted for free
    No

Be nice to know the numbers of how many have had success in fighting the man. Also, I think since this has started many dont go to the first page to vote, just go straight to the last page to throw their hat in the ring.

So I’ve now had a few conversations with Toyota corporate and I haven’t been impressed.

I started with a Tier 1 person who told me the vehicle wasn’t covered on the existing campaign but that I could still submit my estimate to him for possible assistance from Toyota. Estimate from the dealership in hand, I called back several times and had difficulty getting a valid email address for the rep. Finally I was forwarded to a Tier 2 rep. She was a brick wall and told me flatly, sure you can submit for assistance, but you’ll have to do that on the website and it will be denied because there’s no service campaign.

Meanwhile I had a short conversation with Tracy at Johnson Toyota in Meridian, MS who appears to have had success with some of these claims. Didn’t have a chance to talk to her long enough to get details but will try her again when I have more time.

Frustrating, but appears all I can do is have the work done so I don’t risk rust intrusion, and hope that Toyota starts covering Tacomas and that I don’t have additional issues in other areas.

I've been following this issue on and off since I picked up my truck last year. I'm about 14 months in and haven't had any issues yet with paint. Is there a certain period of time when the paint issue seems to come up?

Washed the truck this past weekend and my paint finally failed. Was rinsing off the truck with a regular low pressure hose and noticed the paint literally flake off :(

    Yep 2015

Please call Toyota at (800) 331-4331 and file a complaint on this. Obviously in your case you should be covered under warranty, and maybe that warranty claim gets logged as a data point as well, but we folks outside of warranty coverage would appreciate help with more complaints so that Tacomas will be added to the service campaign covering the 040 paint peeling. There is some threshold in the number of complaints that needs to be crossed.

Look under your hood on the fenders too. Mine started there and then the rear doors like yours. It sucks big time...

So mine started finally peeling. I thought I was okay.

It’s a 2017 I bought certified pre owned. Does anyone know if this should be covered under the pre owned warranty?

I believe paint is excluded from the CPO warranty. Either way go to the dealer and try and get it covered, you never know what’s possible with some goodwill. If not covered, get it documented and open up a case with Toyota.

With so many of these, Toyota has got to add Tacomas to the program soon.

There is a way to submit online, just haven’t personally done it. I’m going to though since otherwise how do they have any evidence to inform whether the “case” is legit.

But theoretically, having Toyota open a case file based on your peeling paint is the minimum needed to add another example towards the threshold to expand the service campaign. Make sure they give you a case number and record it.

Interesting, let me try the 1-800 route

If anyone else has a link for online submission please let me know.

I have random peeling spots Id like to report as well.

It’s getting to the point where Im going to save up and get it re-painted w proper clear and or a similar white. :(
