Here in FL your placard are tied to you and your vehicle. They are not handed out like candy for free. Giving them out free, seems to negate the handicapped parking laws.:notsure: I guess CA has different laws, I'm not an attorney, have never been there, and don't assume to know the laws in effect there.

As for Florida, you have to have a physician sign off concerning your disability, much like a prescription, proving/attesting to your disability. Then you take that application to the DMV and PAY for the placard that comes with a registration to be carried in the vehicle just like you license plate. Even a "permanent" disability placard must be renewed every few years with a new application including the physician's signature and registration fees at the DMV. a lost or destroyed placard can be replaced for a fee at the DMV by presenting the registration.

So all you have to do is "identify" as handicap out there now? Kind of takes away from the whole disability thing doesn't it?

My classic was pulling into a spot, and a guy gave me shit about using the handicapped parking. He is standing out these smoking (I hate cigarette smoke). Five minutes later, the idiot walked into the first medical office, asking how to get to the patient rooms. Turning around, he spotted me waiting for my appointment and looked at the "Oncology" sign. Yep, don't assume. I was there for a lung cancer follow-up post-surgery. Hard time moving and breathing that morning, the week after surgery

Despite Parkinson's, I love getting out into nature and hiking. I had fun in big bend.

no, you got it wrong. A placard is initiated by your doctor, and is issued to you by the DMV. It has nothing to do with any car, only the handicapped person. A renewal is sent every two years. If I recall correctly, there is a confirmation letter that you are still alive. Never any charge for a placard.

This is how Texas does it, except the time period is 4 years. They stopped doing handicapped plates here for a few years (just mailing placards) because of COVID, but started back up again now that the TXDOT offices are back open and they're through the backlog.

This is the right way to do this. Plates for a car should only be on cars designed specifically due to special needs. I happen to own two placards because I have a daughter with special needs. The intent is to help her. As such, the car she rides in should get the privilege whether I am driving or a grandparent is driving. She does not need a "specialized" car. I am VERY strict with the fact that the placard does not come out without her in the car and only when we actually need it to help her. If there aren't many handicap spaces and I can handle getting her inside safely I tend not to use the privilege. I realize I am likely the minority in using these as intended, but that is the intention!

I am glad you know more about the law in Florida than I do, how I came to have the placard, and how I renewed is a MONTH ago.
    :duh:

See I thought, when I took the paperwork/application to my doctor that I was initiating the process.
When I then took the paperwork BACK to the DMV where I got the application originally, the place where I was given instructions how to proceed, the display requirements, and PAID my money, I thought I was paying for it.
It seems odd that it has nothing to do with my car since it has my Taco's tag number on it. Weird, the other one has the other car's tag number in it.
They did say I could take it with me in ANY car I am driving, but also advised that I should ALSO carry the registration with me.
When it was valid for 4 years before I had to take another application to be completed by my doctor and myself, then take the registration and the original placard to the DMV, and give them money that they called a "renewal fee", I thought that meant it was not free.

Boy I guess I am really confused about MY experiences. Glad you were able to clear that up for me.:bowdown::bowdown:

Here is a thought.. Why don't we worry about our own experiences rather than tell someone they are wrong about what they have experienced?

Isn't this a thread about asshole parking?

The question was put about how it worked in California. I quoted your post by mistake along with the other one. Call me an idiot for that mistake and leave it there. Keep it up and it’ll be my turn to bad mouth you and your rattling on about nothing.
By the way, oh, forget about it.

That deserves a sticker that says "looks like your truck is too big for you to drive since you can't fit it in one spot".

Hyundai’s stated towing capacity for the Santa Cruz: 3,500 pounds for the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder model and 5,000 pounds for the turbocharged 2.5-liter model with all-wheel drive. 3800-pound curb weight.

The trailer is about 3400 pounds, 460 pounds on the tongue. (Forest River Wolf Pup - looked at them, but went with a tiny trailer)

I'd give that combo a hard pass!

If someone had parked on the ends, I would have a hard time deciding which of the three was the true asshole.
