According to this forum the transmission design is fine and you’re crazy, but also you should have already known the transmission design is flawed because it’s so well documented. o_O

OP, if it bothers you now, don’t waste money trying to fix it. It won’t really work. If the transmission annoys you, get rid of the truck.

I had my 2021 for 25,000 miles and it never was right. Didn't mind the gear hunting as much, but the shuttering was terrible as I do a lot of driving in that zone it does it. Been to the dealer several times and even driven some others, they all do it. It's someone else's problem now... :anonymous:

I'm coming up on my 2-year mark of owning my AT Sport. Current mileage is just over 19K.

During my early driving months, the habits I had with the throttle did not make shifting any more noticeable than normal.

Likewise with braking--I've tried to have a habit of applying the brakes at least around 100 feet and coming to a somewhat slow stop.

Page 171 of the Owner's Manual advises "Breaking in your new Toyota".

I'm not saying I drove my Taco perfectly but everyone has different driving habits.

EDIT: Some good advice about using S-mode which is on page 212.

I can't remember mine being quite that bad on the 160 mile ride back home from the dealer, which was mostly on the ma. turnpike. I do remember the truck felt sort of slow, and lazy the whole way back, hunting gears every time you had a grade increase on the highway. Seemed till around 1200 miles the truck had a governor, like a break in chip to keep things slower. Almost overnight stuff changed big time...truck had way more giddy-up, plus it was shifting much better, and holding gears. Today at 22k miles it's awesome, i've totally forgotten about my tundra.

I had what I thought was some converter shudder very early on with my truck, but it disappeared right when I did my first tow job around 500 miles and hasn't returned.

Awesome… it does seem to get better almost every time I drive it. Still does the stutter sometimes but almost always after turning. I’m over 500 now and I think your advice has been spot on. Greatly appreciated.

Torque converter solenoid (SLU) kicks in, your rpms drop by 200. New models even have it in 2nd.
Imagine this happens every day while maintaining acceleration on a steep hill... And this part won't fix itself by imaginary learning process.

:notsure:Never noticed any 200 rpm drop, only after the truck engine gets up to temp.

I notice it when going up a slight hill. It won't fully downshift but the RPMs increase just a bit. I figured that the torque converter either coupling or uncoupling (not sure which way it goes but assuming it's the uncoupling).

    here is the illustration.
the upshift to 3rd happened, SLU turned on at 1902 RPMS and accelerator pedal 6.7 %

    Next techstream frame:

Rpms went down to 1528 with accelerator at 8.7%. There is 374 rpms loss in a second while accelerator is being pressed.

Thats all foreign to me. All I know is I now have a transmission that operates like any other I've owned, except with more gears.

I had tune installed today. Amazing, totally different truck. No lag, no gear hunting, and no shutter. Well worth it. Should of done earlier. Never had real complaints about it before, but wow. Thank Noah for OTT tune.

Appreciate the info. Dilemma over. Truck gets better by the day... I'm guessing it's a combo of the break in process for the truck and myself. My driving habits are changing and beginning to feel more normal.

Maybe too much over thinking on this. Imo, there would be a less complaining if everyone had more patience, and just operated these trucks like any other vehicle while putting up with their wonkiness until they're fully broken in. These are still trucks, not a high performance sports car.
