Hi, just got my first Tacoma, 23 SR5 6cyl, auto, 4x4. Curious about what modifications I can do without using the dealer that won’t affect the warranty? At a minimum I’d like to add a roof rack, extended bed, and mud flaps. I’ve never been a fan of dealers working on my vehicles so I’d like to avoid them if possible. Any help is appreciated.

Mud flaps will not affect anything.

I don’t know what you mean by an extended bed.

If your roof rack install damages the roof or allows leaks to damage anything inside the cab it will likely not be covered by your warranty.

Modifications that can be tied to an issue will not be covered under warranty. So say you drill holes for a roof rack, then develop a leaky roof. Decent chance the leaky roof will not be covered under warranty.

But if you install a roof rack, then have a drivetrain issue, not much reason that a warranty claim would be denied for the drivetrain (assuming no other mods).

As for mud flaps, you can buy OEM Toyota. Install shouldn’t be too difficult.

By extended bed, I mean the cage thing that attaches to the rear of the bed when the tailgate is open. I don’t see a connection for one and I assume a mod is necessary.

The word “mod” around here is typically much more involved. We get members buying new trucks, driving it off the lot and immediately replacing the suspension, tires, cutting up the body. Those mods can void warranty.

Adding mudflaps and a bed extender shouldn’t cause much of an issue, assuming you don’t cut/drill into anything frivolously.
