I had that done when I got it a couple years ago. it's mostly just looking like the upper hose is nasty. I'm guessing it's from not always holding fluid so it's allow to dry and crust up but really idk

 

yea most likely, shouldnt be too much concern

 

There's definitely some of what looks like mud in the bottom of the radiator I'll flush it (and the hoses) out as best as I can before it goes back in.

Little progress being made

 

I made some mistakes... After being told repeatedly not to do the oil pump I decided to put a new one in thinking it would be a few simple bolts...


I got the AC and power steering is out of the way and the oil pump started to come out but now it's hanging up on the metal oil line inside the pan big oversite on my part.


So it looks like I'll be pulling the axle and diff and welding in the oil return bung into the pan once I get it out.

 

Diff is out, oil pan is off, oil pump is removed.

 

The front of the motor is all back together except for the radiator and transmission cooler. I did find a little clearance issue on the timing belt tensioner and tensioner pulley that may have something to do with why Timmy the toolman stripped out a bolt in his timing belt video.


When I was taking it apart I noticed the tensioner pulley wasn't moving freely after the tensioner was removed and that seemed odd but I didn't think much about it until I went to put the new pulley in

I ended up filing down the edge a little and placed a copper washer between the oil pump housing and pulley and now it moves like it should


You can see a little wear mark in the cast aluminum on my old oil pump and tensioner pulley so I'm wondering if this is something others have seen as well.

Not the greatest picture but you can see where it was rubbing and keeping the tensioner from doing it's job properly.

 

Oil pan is welded up and we're back on track.

My pen fit perfectly inside the AN10 fitting for a center punch mark




Drilled a pilot hole and then used a step bit to finish of the hole






Might not be Perdy but so far it seems to be doing the trick and it means more to me when I can do it myself

Truck is back together (minus the grill) and running GREAT. Good hell that diff was a pain in the ass to get back in. I accidentally broke off the little breather nipple on the front diff actuator, maybe the lifetime warranty will cover it

On a quick trip around town my coolant temp stayed around 174°. new thermostat for the win. flushing out a bunch of gunk probably helps too glad to know that's not sitting in the radiator anymore. I'm still surprised it was so dirty.

I also busted BOTH of my durobumps off when pulling the CV axles out. so far I am really disappointed with durobumps, I already epoxied one back on in the past after it popped off the first time.

 

@GoJo would it be possible to get some measurements and pictures of that CX down pipe?
I went and talked to the gentlemen who built my current exhaust about making some changes to the system

On another note my radiator hose seems to be leaking so ill definitely be getting a new one. I'm also looking at ordering some ARP bolts for the lower ball joints and installing new oil seals on the CV axle they've been leaking since I put the diff back in

 

you having issues with OEM bolts?

 

No, but I don't want to either. I may go with oem black bolts, basically just want to replace them because I don't know their history and how many times they've been reused and abused. I figured put new ones on when I do the oil seals

 

Yea definitely get them replaced. Lbj too if they are in the same boat. Those bolts shouldn't be reused either as they stretch when torque, so reused is a bad idea especially in the 1st generation.
