What's with all the DIY guys that are always placing the blame on a customer for a shop/companies mistakeo_O I do all my own maintenance and mods as well but I just don't understand this logic.
To what extent of damage needs to be done for the blame or cost of repairs to be put on the shops shoulders? What if the axle grinder slipped and ran all the way down the side of the door and caused $1000's of dollars of damage? Should the OP just chalk it up to shit happens and bite the bullet, the truck still runs fine? Yeah it's only $150 but why does that logic not apply to the shop doing the repairs? Or what if the mechanic is a drunk and f'd up something serious while intoxicated? That's ok, we all like to have a drink now and then?!? Maybe you should have done your due diligence and have a background check done on the mechanic and made sure he wasn't an alcoholic!?! The examples could go on forever.
If a shop called me and told me my shit was rusted together and they were not confident in their abilities or they didn't have the correct tools, I would take it somewhere else 100 times out of 100! Sure if more labor was needed because of said rust that's fair. A careless mistake is another story.
Whatever happened to principles and morals?

You're lucky they're even working on it. Bring them an extra 100$ tip and a case of beer

I haven't priced one lately (replaced both on my old T-100), but $150 sounds a bit high. Are they marking up this piece, or charging you the actual cost for the part.
I'd ask them to split the extra $150.

A lot of shops cut the bearing instead of press off. I press them off, but I'm sure one day I'll come across one that won't budge. If in the process I have to damage other parts, that's collateral damage and must be done. You are halfway through the job and cannot stop, since the vehicle is now disabled.

I agree the shop should have stopped and called the customer. But what if there wasn't any time to call them? Maybe the mechanic thought he could get it done without extra damage, and inadvertently damaged another part. Only the shop/tech knows for sure.

If there was no way around damaging the part, calling the customer first doesn't matter. The customer basically can't refuse the $150 part. Are they gonna tow the vehicle out of the shop, missing a wheel and drag it on the axle housing, over a $150 part? NOPE.

They do, now that they no longer have any descendants to distract them from their work.

UPDATE: Got the truck back. They split the part cost with me. Which is fair in my humble opinion. The clicking sound that I originally came into the shop for (which they diagnosed as a bad rear wheel bearing) is still there. Every time I hit the breaks there's a clanking sound coming from the back and there's a constant velocity clicking sound under 30 mph that goes away when I hit the clanking breaks. I asked the tech before I left if there was anything to point out and he shrugged and said no. Back to square one but with a new wheel bearing that apparently I needed but who knows now since I don't know if this shop is even proficient at cars.

OP said they diagnosed the problem previously. So they knew or should have known what they’re getting into, rust and all. They could have turned him away. If OP truthfully told us the story, I still don’t think very highly of this place.

Now all the vitriol and threatening lawyer shit over $150 I’m not cool with either.

But that’s why I work on my own stuff, to avoid crap like this.

How are they supposed to know the bearing won't budge though? If they quote a bunch of extra stuff they'll just end up sounding expensive and he'll go somewhere else. Shops can never win when rust is involved. I feel sorry for them.

But, looking at the edit it sounds like they still have a noise problem. They'll get fucked into doing a bunch more free work just to avoid a bad review. I'll bet the shoes and hardware are all rusted out and scraping the drum. Probably needs all new brake parts

Who says I would bring it back to them? Also, I’m wondering if the bearing was even bad at all. If what you say is true then they misdiagnosed it and I spent a ton of money on that. I won’t be bringing it to them though.

For all you know it had 2 problems. A bad bearing and a clicking sound from something else

But I'll bet they pulled the drum off without loosening the shoe adjuster and bent the hardware. Or the adjuster was frozen. They should have quoted all new brake parts and drums. But again, if they quote too high they lose the sale. It's like walking tightrope.

They could be inexperienced when it comes to estimating, it's not easy to get right and it takes years to learn. I turn down rusty undercar work all the time. If I take it on, oftentimes I'll tell them it will take as long as it takes and cost what it costs. If you don't like it, go somewhere else

Yup time for a different opinion. Be sure to mention the last shops work and how it didn't fix the issue. Little more pressure for them to fix it right.

I’m more interested as to why the bearing wouldn’t come off?
More specifically, did they use a press? Do they have a press?
How did they get bearing on?

At this point, just pay the money and walk.
It’s going to be so much easier.

Idk man. Rust fucking sucks, yes! I haven’t seen the rust and how bad it is, but the shop apparently has before agreeing to work on it. Maybe that’s where clear and honest communication becomes important. Something like “hey this is the price if all goes well, but lemme tell ya, your trucks a rust bucket, and we may have to break stuff that could end up costing you more…”

What did they charge you for replacing the bearing.
This will tell us a lot.

It was 397 for labor and half the part cost.
