Ive only wheeled once in the last year.

 

trying to figure out which torque converter to buy. what on earth are the codes...colored circles and dots?

 

*note i did replace the distributor and plugs and wires and the truck is still accelerating like shit. When it does this, the RPMs go pretty high, like 3k, before it will engage and finally start moving. Torque converter or solenoids? After replacing the plugs and coils, no engine codes at all, even when this acceleration shuddering is happening

 

Not much help with the TC numbers. I'd imagine its just that companys number.

Seems like it could be the TC at this point or other tranny issues. You have worked that poor thing pretty hard.

That poor transmission has not had an easy life, thats for sure.

I should. im assuming that can be done without fully taking apart the tranny? Like if its coming out to replace the TC anyway, a lowly simpleton like me can do it without opening it up fully?

 

Take the pan off and they're right there in the open, easy peasy to change them all.

 

Sweet. I know replacing things is always the right answer...but even if there are no codes being thrown for them, do they wear out and slowly get *worse* or is this a part that just fails one day? and this will hopefully reset that clock?

 

Two went bad on my land cruiser and would occasionally stick it in gears. Sometimes it would get stuck in 3rd when it should have dropped back to 1. Two new shift solenoids and one TC lockup solenoid it was back to shifting correctly and it even shifted faster. The circuit that trips a code for solenoid failure only looks for resistance and the resistance can be okay even on a bad solenoid. It's worth noting on old tacos like yours the only way the trans can communicate is through the O/D light, so if that's burned out or you leave O/D off all the time you're never gonna even know if its trying to tell you something.

Yeah might as well, cannot hurt. Then you've done all three easy things to change while the pan is off.

on the TC steering rack bushings. Made a world of difference in driving the runner.

 

Yeah they are so much better. Need to do my 95 too.

 

Saw a GR Corolla today for the first time. Barely noticed till I saw the badge on the back. Looks fun!

Hey there Wyoming Tacoma owners! I'll be moving to the Green River area this summer from NY for a Fish and Game job, any recommendations for where to hit some trails around there? NY has basically nothing as far as trails so I don't have a ton of offroad experience and my truck is stock height with pretty much just upgraded skid plates, but I'm excited to have more opportunities to get out there. Any other info, offroading related or not, that you'd care to share would be greatly appreciated too, I'm excited to get out of NY. Thanks!

 

Green river is a bit out of the way of most of the big trails. But there will be endless miles of roads around there to explore.


North is some cool stuff to explore. High elevation desert brush land. Plus eventually the wind river mountains.

Just south if you is flaming gorge and beyond that lots and lots of cool shit in Utah right there. And Colorado. You'll have plenty to explore within a 3-6 hour circle.

 

That sounds great, I'm happy to travel and make a day/weekend of it. By roads do you mean pavement or fire roads?
