Agreed about stopping in the middle of the lane. All leaked fluids collect there, but also (in my thinking) it's easier for driver's to recognize a tail/brake light when it's where their eyes are expecting; i.e. over a wheel track. Also also, the center of the lane could be crowned, meaning the pavement under your foot will be lower than you may be expecting. As for the leaked fluid, if you stop your bike in the right-hand wheel track, mind where you put your left foot... that first step is a doozy!

I'm not sure about DOT laws in PA, but in CA the books state your brake light can flash up to three times, but must stay solid on the fourth. At red lights, if I see a vehicle coming up in my mirror, I'll let my modulator flash until solid, release, then repeat until the car has stopped.

As @TacoTyusday said, we have both circles and rectangles in CA. The sensor only reads on the ring itself. To give yourself the best chance at being recognized, make sure the most magnetic part of your bike (usually engine) is directly over the ring. If all else falls, report the intersection and time of day. Most jurisdictions have a way/number to report sensors that need to be adjusted, usually by the county's/city's Public Works.

That’s what I told people about the 1290r SuperDuke…it was very easy to ride. Like an SV650 (which was my track bike for years, SO much fun on that bike).
However when you wanted to get stupid, it was there. Never once felt over my head on that bike. Probably cause went you went over a certain speed the wind was gonna blow you off. Lol

PA finally put in something called a "dead red" rule. You must come to a complete stop, obviously, but after a "reasonable" wait you may turn left on a red provided conditions permit. Basically you can treat that light like a stop sign. It's been fought for here for years because we have so many intersections where those sensors don't recognize motorcycles. There is one at the top of an exit ramp like that on my way to work. Not uncommon for me to turn left on a Rd there 2-3 times a week.

The last I remember, my MSF instructor said in CA you must wait 2-3 light cycles. However, if the light never changes, how are you supposed to know when a cycle has passed? Also, let's say you've waited three cycles and then proceed through the intersection just as a LEO pulls up. Unless you have a helmet cam recording how long you've sat, how would you prove it if the LEO wants to cite you?

When I lived in Hawaii there was a light that never detected my bike. It was turning from a side road onto a main road, so not enough traffic to help me out usually and too much traffic to run the light almost always. Sometimes I feel like I'm still sitting at that light.

Also, I've only ever split lanes once. It was when traffic on Oahu was at a total stop because of an accident somewhere. I was out there so long that I almost ran out of gas, so I pressed the easy button.

Good points. I'm unclear on the exact time they expect you to wait. My FJR has a clock in the dash so I've been using 2-3 minutes before turning on a red. I feel confident that most of our local cops know this intersection sucks so I guess I don't think too much about it.

Hell to the naw!!! Never turn left at red, don’t care who says it’s ok. That shit is nuts. I would bust a right and either uturn that bitch or find a turnaround.
That shit sounds crazy as fuck…you guys don’t do that do you?!

I feel like some shit would appear out of no where and I would get smoked!

Intersection I'm referencing I'm doing this at around 6 am. Traffic is reasonably light but if I wait for my light to change I could be there all day. 95% of traffic coming off that exit is turning right so turning right then getting to where I could safely turn around to go my direction is just about as bad. When I first moved to this house the intersection in question didn't even have a traffic light just a stop sign. In some ways the light made it worse!

I already have auxiliary lighting on my bike and most of my gear and helmet are hi-viz yellow.

    Better now?

I don’t think the deflector helps at all with actual wind deflection but I love the way it looks!

Also thinking of things, what do you guys keep on you for tire patchs in the event of a puncture while on the road? Mushroom plug or tried n true patch kit strips?
