Flaming Gorge sucks

 

Just over the Utah border to the south is the Ashley national forest and there's a million miles of dirt forest roads to explore

 

dirt roads. BLM for days. BOR probably too. A lot of stuff. oil patch roads..just. roads. Mostly dirt.

 

Sounds good to me, hard to even find regular dirt roads here. The more I look the more I see Forest Service fire roads to the south so I'll definitely be checking them out.

what are you doing for fish and game?

 

I'll put it this way. My dad owns a book titled "8000 miles of dirt roads in Wyoming" hahaha

 

Just a 4 month job electrofishing for cutthroat for now, I'm hoping they'll pick me up for something longer term after but we'll see. Heavily considering working for the ambulance service there too since I'll probably have at least 6 months of apartment lease, the only thing stopping me from applying is finishing my certification up.

I'm sure I'll get back in touch for pointers once I get out there. For now, anything special I should know about BLM/Forest Service land use? I know about closing gates behind you and leave no trace, the basic stuff, but is there anything special to be aware of for federal land etiquette or use-wise? The only real public land I've been on is state land in NY, just wanna make sure there aren't any special rules I might not know.

 

Sounds like a book I'd do well to read, might check it out, thanks! My dad just passed a book on to me called "Ghost Towns of the Old West" that I'm hoping will give me some interesting places to go too. Gotta love dads and their books

 

Watch for fire bans, I dunno if that'll happen this year though, depends on the weather. I don't know when gates on the forest will open this year... snow is balls deep.

14 day camp limit in one spot, private property is pretty well marked with orange paint or locked gates, in Utah anyway.

really just common courtesy with other people on the mountain, kinda gotta be on the look out for people driving like idiots.

Finally getting around to fixing the rig from my deer hit almost a year ago, “I see a gold taco and I want it painted black” SXS tires have almost gotten bigger than Tacomas, time for new shoes.

 

Which headlights did you go with?

 

DT moto off eBay for the headlights, wish I’d gotten OEM grill clips, the ones that came with it suck

 

I'll be curious how the light pattern is with those. That is usually the downfall of non-OEM housings. But I know the price difference too.

 

Will be interesting to see, I was never impressed with the OEM headlights either, so no real optimism about cheap aftermarket. As a general rule I consider the ditch and bumper lights mandatory for night driving, but that only works if you live in the middle of nowhere.
