Did we ever figure out why the 3rd Gen will be so (relatively) short lived?

Probably the underwhelming drivetrain and the need to keep up with the joneses as far as tech. That new Colorado is pretty legit.

Wonder what tomorrows teaser will be. Interior shot maybe?

I wasn't aware we were expecting a teaser tomorrow. How likely is it?

I miss my 2nd gen. The 3rd gen just isn't as good in my opinion. I can't stand the drivetrain on the highway of all places. I do like the simplicity of it and the exterior styling is on point (except long nose). Anyhow, really excited for 4th. I am anxious to see the color selection the most lol..
I want a matt blue again or cement...

I think Toyota is also going toward a model of revising a vehicle every few years instead of going on 10 or 15 year runs. I believe this is a goal of the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), with this they are supposed to be able to revise vehicles more quickly.

The Toyota way doesn't necessarily allow for quick innovation. They want to only use proven technology to keep quality and reliability but I think this also leads to long model runs.

This is my understanding of it anyway. I could be off.

It was never intended to run as long as the second gen. It was really a gen 2.5 with an updated drivetrain and styling. The rest of the truck is very similar to the second gen. A stop gap until Toyota completely redesigned the platform essentially. Increased segment competition also helps. The midsize segment has never been this hot.

Because they haven't really released a 3rd gen yet. The 2016-2023 was just an updated version of the same truck released in 2004.

The question isn't why was it so short, the question is why was it so long.

A new engine and transmission is an update? With all of the other differences from my 2013 and 2015, it sure seems like more than an update to me.

The transmission and engine certainly change the driving characteristics of the third gen, I would even say it’s feels a little more civilized compared to the old 4.0. They also redesigned the 4x4 actuator, larger gas tank and a lot of other small changes that do add up. But at the end of the day it has the same bones as the 2nd gen. It will be exciting to get a completely new frame, different cab dimensions and a new powertrain. I hope it retains the same solid feeling that Toyota truck based vehicles have. The IFS, front diff and steering components are nice and stout on the third gen.

Toyota changes engines and transmissions within the same generation all the time, though even on the Tacoma, they did carry forward the (lightly updated) 2.7L and same 5-speed manual transmission. It was a big update for the model as a whole, however internally Toyota considers it a mid-model change (MMC) and not a full model change (FMC).

In particular, that is why for the 4-cylinder models which didn't get a new engine block, the chassis codes remained the same, TRN245 and TRN265, and the frame numbers didn't go back to 0 for 2016.

I have a post explaining some more of the details earlier in this thread and in others over the years. People seem content to refer to it as the 3rd generation and that makes things easier to distinguish, so that's the vernacular that's used around these parts, but the reality is that it was a lower cost option Toyota chose to avoid having to actually develop a new Tacoma for a few more years.

For similar large mid-model changes Toyota did during the 2010's that also included sheet metal, interior, and electrical updates, see the 2011 Avalon, 2011 Highlander, 2012 Lexus LS, 2014 Tundra, 2015 Camry, 2021 Lexus IS.

Toyota uses the same parts catalog for 2005-2023 Tacoma, 674470. It's interesting when Toyota chooses to split a catalog, occasionally it will happen within the same generation, for instance the 1986-1988 and 1989-1992 Supra have separate catalogs, but Toyota never uses the same catalog across generations.

So... I guess it's mostly just an interesting tidbit, but that's how it be.

The gas tank carried over from 2015 to 2016. It's the same replacement part number for 2005-2017 from Toyota. They're all 80 L.

    Jeff
