Just looking for guidance on what to do with my 2004 Xtra cab 4x4 after the rebuild engine I had put in died... the original engine went out at 330000 and with the rebuild got to 450000 between the two before the rebuilt engine died.. everything about the truck body wise is really good - no rust, dents, paint issues, etc.. other than the engine there are no issues with anything else.. I don't need this truck as I recently purchased a 23' Tacoma TRD off road but not sure what to do with my 2004.. considering selling it but wasn't sure if it's worth much without a working engine.. any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated..20220722_152330.jpg 20220722_160120.jpg

if everything is solid, it's worth putting another engine in for sure. You're right that you wont get much for as a non working truck.

It's still worth something as a parts truck, especially for anyone looking to do a 4x4 swap on their Prerunner.

Otherwise if you can afford to put another rebuild in, you should be able to sell it for more than you spent on the rebuilt/used engine.

How much do you want to sell it for with a good used engine? This is A.
Get a quote for installing a good used engine. This is B.

Subtract B from A and list it AS IS for that amount, maybe in this current market you'll have some interested folks who are happy to put a engine it.

    I had similar situation......
    I found a $1000 remanufactured short block....
And then new aftermarket head for $750....

    I'm now at 15K........

5vz is pretty much double that price.....

Worth much more with a running engine. My boss just sold one with a blown engine for $3k.

450k miles on the truck is a lot though. If you have to pay for the labor, it will likely be cheaper to sell as is.

If you do keep it, I recommend a used, lower mileage engine. Most rebuilds are crap, and you could buy 4 used motors for the price of 1 rebuilt one.

Appreciate all the replies... still deciding on what to do... if I was to sell as is what price would you all recommend it's listed for?

Talking with the shop I've taken it to since purchasing it in 2009 the cost to get it going again is around 8k...given I just purchased a new 2023 Tacoma that's more than I can afford at the moment.. its in such good shape even after 450,000 miles it's hard not to get it running again... maybe possible to do that for less than the 8k quoted by my shop?

If there's no rush or need to sell it, then I'd hang onto it and keep an eye out for a used 3rz. It definitely can be put back into driving condition for far less than 8k. Just will likely require patience and perhaps some elbow grease on your part. I vote keep it and fix her up when funds and time allow. That truck is way too nice to let go for the measly amount you'll get offered in a non-operable condition. Just my $0.02.

If the 2023 is a financial stretch I'd sell the old one and maybe consider refinancing and or paying down the 2023. Don't let sentimental attachment ruin your finances. That said, I'm sure you could get the old one running again for less if you did the work yourself.

Over time you'll find you wished you never sold some vehicles and wished you never bought others.

There is definitely no rush to sell it... would prefer to get it up and running again either to sell or to use solely for my fishing/camping trips.. only issue with that is financial given the monthly payment on the new Tacoma I just took on.. could probably save enough for a new engine but I don't have the skills/knowledge to do the work myself, which means I'll have to pay labor costs as well.. only way I'd sell it "as is" now is if someone was willing to pay at least 2k for it.. but I'm not sure without a working engine it's even worth that... appreciate your .02...

It's worth more than $2k as is. Another option is to part it out. You would be amazed how much you can sell the parts for. I'd guess $3-$4k if you parted out. Most of the people buying will remove the parts for you. I've parted out several 4runners, done in 1-2 months. Kind of fun.

Here in SoCal there are several 2.7L motors for sale. Mileage from 100k-200k. Price from $2k-$3k. 3-6 month warranty.
