Bought a 2016 Tacoma... with 191k on it

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 with 191k on it (got it for $19,500)... I knew it wouldn't be perfect but it drove better than a lot of the tacos that I test drove before hand, and I tested the 4x4 on a gravel parking lot. I did get a 12 month, 12k miles powertrain warranty on it too.

I called the local Toyota dealer to get it in for service in 2 days (the 20th). There is a carfax that talks about some of the service, but Toyota (corporate) doesn't have records on a lot of services that should have been performed (so may or may not have been done).

I planned to have the tranny serviced and the Toyota service dept called me and suggested to only drain and fill, not a full service because if it had never been done, then you shouldn't open it up. I have always heard that but never really knew if that was really good practice.

I'm having them drain and refill the tranny, service the 4x4 diffs, oil change and rotate the tires.

I know some have gone through something similar in their life (not necessarily tacoma related), so I thought I would get other's opinions...

Congratulations on the new to you truck.

I prefer doing a drain & fill also, especially on an older vehicle with an unknown history. I refer to it as a "soft change".

Old vehicles with long neglected automatic transmissions may have a fair amount of build up.

If you get close to 100% percent of the old fluid out you hit the (dirty) transmission with new full strength additives - like taking a laxative - everything cuts loose right now and can cause trouble.

With a soft change you get some fresh additives in there to start doing some gentle cleaning, more like adding some fruit to your diet instead of the laxative.

 

I'd do spark plugs also..unless there is a record of them being done at least twice.

 

PCP valve change too. It’s often neglected. May cause oil leaks if clogged.

 

Fuck the dealer. Find a local independent service shop and go there.

 

For a truck this far removed from any factory warranty or recall items, I concur. Have a local indy shop do the basics, then drive that fucking into the ground!

 

Jesus, 200k mile tacoma for $19,500?

Id rather buy a domestic with 50k-75k(2012 f150/ gmc Sierra 1500) miles for that price, and get a full size but i guess to each their own. That’s quite a price to pay, with having to get it up to date with service.

That's always the biggest indicator of quality to me, personally. 200k mile Toyota's sell for $20k, 200k domestics sell for $2k.

That's been my experience at least. Blows my mind that people still waste their money on trucks that depreciate that fast.

Thats the joy of the market being diverse. People have different wants/needs, and while it may seem crazy to one, it makes perfect sense to another. Considering some only put a handful of miles on a vehicle per year, or whatever other reason there may be, a $2k truck may serve another 7 years, while a $20k truck may also only serve 7 more years. Afterall, they're both at the same mileage/age, and may present with the same problems over the years to come. Risk/reward says you have multiple chances at getting a decent $2k truck to serve the same amount of time the $20k truck would. Its crazy to think, but a $20k 200k mile truck is probably a much higher risk than the beater when it comes to value.

And by beater, I mean the example of a similar year/mileage domestic truck. They're both investments at the end of the day, and both sides of the argument could easily be fought. Its completely dependent on the buyer's intent and usage.

 

I know right.. Closing in on 100K on my 2017 F150 with zero issues and still worth what I paid for it new.

 

Toyota's aren't the only ones that hold up, just more often than others. Resale values speak for themselves.

 

Had 165k miles on my 2007 ranger when I sold it. Drove like new except for 1st and R being finnicky when cold.

Replaced starter, thermostat housing x2, TB and AIC valve. Rest was maintenance. Had it for 7 years and 95k miles, was an awesome machine. Never let me down.

Wish I could’ve kept it…

I’m the biggest Toyota fan there is, my experience with other manufacturers has been excellent as well.

I’d say the same thing about any brand, 200k miles for 20k, for a truck that sold for 32k(roughly) new is pretty insane.
I understand the market is high currently, but that’s just a bad purchase no matter what brand it is. Just my .02

we should be promoting good purchases and ideas here, that’s all I’m saying. Hopefully that truck lasts another 200k for him, the odds aren’t in OPs favor
