Last night I was making a cut on the chop saw-- diagonal cut to make a door stop. That's a fairly long cut and I could tell it was getting something warm but didn't think much of it. After the cut there seemed to be a little smoke, then I noticed it was continuing. Guess I had built up too much sawdust under the saw and it started lightly smoldering. Grabbed my portable air tank & blew it out of there. Will have to make a point of keeping it clean.

Hell, just last night I was using a piece of scrap ply to practice a technique of a start/stop plunge cut with my palm router to make a dado for some drawer boxes I plan on making here soon. Anyway, long story short, the dust extraction on my Ridgid palm router is non existent and the saw dust in the dado started smoldering. Luckily I was there to address the issue but just imagine if that cherry fell onto the floor that had a covering of sawdust and got buried under more sawdust. Now, I'm not saying that the shop needs to be exam room clean but loose piles of dust and chips are cleaned up at the end of the day for just this very reason. It's not just soaked rags that can kick off a fire, it's best to remain vigilant.

Sugar factories explode because fine powder collects in elevator shafts which have electrical components and sparks.

Its not just sugar factories; granaries, silo's, lumber yards, packing plants, refineries, mills, etc. are all susceptible to explosions during transfer operations. On a small scale, touch the pipe on a dust collection system that isn't adequately grounded that has been running for a while. The static buildup on the pipe is enough to hurt, let alone start a fire in the collection bin. Part (read that as a small inconsequential part, not necessarily cool part) of my job consists of reading the after action reports of large scale industrial accidents and some of those accidents happened due to no fault of the operator. OSHA uses those reports to design systems and practices to create a safer work environment.
