Model Y long range may be the best bargain.

The 50 mile range EV I was thinking about is a used Nissan Leaf. They can be bought for $4K to $6K. If someone were looking for a cheap econobox errand car they could do far worse.

As for people saying they need 600 miles of range, who am I to say they don't. I mean my truck only has a 300ish mile range and it's pretty useless. /s But you are correct in saying some think they NEED way more range than they do. I literally use my Tesla for long distance driving and its 320 mile range is in the sweet spot. I wouldn't pay extra for a 600 mile car, there's no point. When I road trip I like to run the battery in the 70ish to 13ish percent range. That's about 2.5 hours or 160ish miles of real world, 80 mph, driving between stops. For those that don't know EV batteries charge faster when they are depleted and gradually slow down as they fill. Going from 13% to 75% takes about the same amount of time as going from 75% to 100%. More quick charges will get you to your destination faster than fewer full charges. And if someone is driving 600 miles without stopping I don't want their tired ass on the road. I just got back from a 1,500 mile road trip. On the last day I did 670 miles. Even with breaks every 2 or so hours and using Autopilot extensively I was dog tired at the end of the day.

This is why I say that if a person buys an EV who can't do simple math they shouldn't buy an EV. It's way beyond their comprehension. Most of the EV haters hate EV's because they have to do math...lol

I’ve asked more than a few of the EV phobics I know to keep a log, just for a week or two, of the distance of their trips. Commuting, errands etc. Not a single one has done it…. I think they’re afraid that I’ll prove to them that even with my Volt’s 40 mile range they’ll not have to use gas for months at a time.

ah yes the 1st gen leaf, I remember them getting more like 70+ miles but perhaps that was optimistic & didn’t include 14 years of battery degradation.

If I wanted an EV I'd buy a Polestar. Yet I have no interest in commuting in a car, and electric trucks are just dumb.

I’ve seen a hand full of Polestars this month alone, they’re starting to pick up some sales. Very odd to me that they include the sticker on the lower door panel:

I have a few in my town black and a white. I like the minimalistic look and the SUV coming out is pretty nice looking. That sticker on the new models is actually smaller and lighter in color now.

Part of what convinced me to make the jump was using an app(Road Trip) to track my gas usage and cost. 99% of the time I can charge at home so I leave home topped off everyday and don't generally take many long trips. If I do Ive watched enough online reviews to realize the Tesla charging network is robust enough to get the job done.

I've got 18K road tripping miles and 138 Supercharger visits under my belt. I've had maybe 3 times where the Supercharger didn't work and had to move over one stall, hardly worth mentioning. Road tripping a Tesla is dead simple. Most of the time I just tell the car where I want to go and let it figure out the stops. The only problem I've found is it will gladly drive you into a charging desert without a way to get back out. The solution is simple, just make Timbuktu a way point and end at a Supercharger.

RIVIAN is opening up their chargers to all car brands so more choices are coming.
