Man I’m not gonna lie I was a bit disappointed with my “poor man’s TRD intake” when I installed it 4 years ago. Absolutely zero performance gains.

    Sounds great though!

Incorrect my friend. My comment was not directed at ALL aftermarket filters, just CAI’s and I could give a shit if you’re onboard or not.

trd or bust, don't use oiled filters...even k&n, which does flow more air, also lets in larger particles...it's really for track use only, not everyday, despite them saying it is for everyday. several studies have shown it lets in very large particles, not good for daily, plus the oil will screw up your maf, BIG time. several tv shows have even done tests with dynos showing k&n does restore power (an air filter won't make power, just restore it) but they also did tests to see how well it filtered, not very well was the results of all of them. my favorite youtube tester, projectfarm, did a particle test, k&n flows well because it's letting so much garbage in. when I worked for toyota and a newer vehicle came in with rough idle and other maf caused problems, 9/10 they had a k&n filter and a maf with a LOT of buildup from the oil and extra dirt it let pass by. WIX filters are actually really good.

THAT cai is actually not even cold air. The trd one is pretty well proven. hp costs money and cheap mods are never worthwhile

the trd intake uses an oiled filter that is basically a rebranded k&n without the red colouring. even uses k&n oil.

Funny thing is, especially for the 2nd gen, the 2nd version of the TRD CAI will accept a 2012 4runner OEM filter, which means you can install the worlds most tested filter from Nappa. The Gold is amazing for filtration and flow, there are a number of tests on various sites that prove that.
I run this set up and have NO dust on my intake tract tube, and it flows just as well as K&N, AEM, or the trd filter.

Funnier is that the 3rd gen Tacoma V6 uses the same air filter as the V8 Tundra. PPPOOOOWWWEEERRRRRRRR!

Here's my setup..... Works great and I left the charcoal filter in also. It will snort around 3500 - 4000 rpm.

I use the TRD red intake it looks good and with the oem paper filter not the k&N type. too much dust out here
for an oiled filter. Everyone is talking about the oil form the oiled filter put in an oil separator and see how much
is going into the intake. Or pull the intake tube and look at the oil coming in from the breather tube and on to
your throttle body. The reason throttle bodies get gunkie is do the oil coming into the system.

Oil separator (aka. catch can) main purpose has nothing to do with using an oiled filter. I guess it could catch some of that oil but most of it will be burnt off inside the combustion chamber.

To see if you over oiled your filter take the intake tube off and look inside. You’ll have oil slick everywhere and your MAF sensor and throttle body should be covered in oil too. The job of an oil separator is to catch and filter out the blow-by vapour gases and moisture that are from your engine oil from inside the crankcase that blow past your piston rings. With no oil separator in the return hose it sends these gases and other nasty stuff back into the intake manifold to be burned off, unfortunately leading to your throttle body getting gummed up. Oil separators will allow your engine to run cleaner and get better MPG.

I have a J&L kit on mine. Biggest benefit I know for running one on a 3rd Gen Tacoma is that on steep climbs the oil displacement floods to the back of the engine. It will stop oil starvation and not flood the throttle body by sucking all the oil through the return hose.

After having it installed for only 2700 kms (1677 miles) this is what I had in my canister. I doubt anyone would want that recirculating back through their engine. If you did have an over oiled filter maybe you would have caught even more in the can? Who knows.

I too run a JLT catch can on my Tacoma and about every month I clean out the residue it has collected. Jay that ownes JLT is minutes away from me and I have used all his products over the years. He is the leader in CAIs on the Mustangs. I run the new TRD CAI and I have used the red oiled filter and no dust or any issues. Granted I don't drive my Tacoma everyday but I never have had an issue of any kind. I run a KDMAX tune Pro 9, TRD exhaust and I'm on 285s and to this day my trunk runs better than the day i bought it. I switched back to the paper filter and have been running it for a few weeks and I can tell you this, the paper filter has smoothed out the truck. It feels a little more refined as with the red filter is was allowing more air in which you can feel when driving. I guess one way is saying it felt more responsive when taking off from a stop. It didn't feel faster, it felt a little more touchier when taking off from a stop. Power wise I think they are the same but again I did not see the first indication of any dust at the bottom of the intake when I removed the red filter after a few years of using it. I'm still running the paper OEM filter as I am just seeing which one I like better and as of right now I could be happier with either one.

I didn't mean that the oil catch can cleans the oil from the oiled air filter but rather that the engine
is also getting oil from the bypass hose. You can check this by looking at the intake tube down stream
of the bypass hose. Or can look here

However, the TRD CAI( 2 gen) box will accept a 4runner air filter, meaning you can go buy a better filter while still using the TRD system.
And yes I use this method and have for many many many years
