Has anyone experienced their 255s are more prone to side strikes and hits while on the trail / rock crawling causing alignment issues due to not be as buoyant?

    Have you had buoyancy issues?

I read thru this thread a few months ago and seem to recall someone saying that 235/85/16 fit the spare tire holder without modification. I can’t for the life of me find it now. Anyone know if that size does indeed fit without modding the carrier? Thanks

235? That should fit just fine, That is around the same size a stock tire just skinny.

Thanks for the reply. I asked because of the diameter difference 30.5 vs 31.7. Getting new tires while on an excursion and don’t want to have to do parking lot mods to get my spare to fit.

Would be awesome if we could put this in a sticky with all the different tire sizes that fit with no modification and then those that fit with modification and what is needed to accomplish fitment.

I really appreciate this response. Thank you. I just found the tire pressure calculator online that does indeed show 37psi from the OEM conversion. I also noticed that all the tire pressure charts for the C load only go down to 35, so that’s a good point.

I spent months going back and forth between which tires I wanted. I think the 255/75’s in C are a good match for the Tacoma. In the end, I couldn’t justify the mass and weight of the 285/70r17’s. I think I would have also been happy with a 275/70, but the Toyo’s were only in load E, and I was intrigued about the concept of a skinny. The truck does not feel any more sluggish to me coming from an SL 265/75r16, and so far the overall traction has been really good.

I can’t be much help regarding fitment on a stock setup as I have about 2” up front and negative offset. My front mud flaps had to come off with the -10, but it’s possible that would be the case even at stock offset.

That calculator blew my mind because it said 35 for my 285 Duratracs, which is what they chalk tested out to

Informationally, the tire pressure calculator said I need to run 35 psi. Chalk testing put my pressure at 30, which I have been running for a year with perfect tread wear. Additionally, it says my car needs 35psi, while ive been running 37 voa chalk testing. Not sure it's as encompassingly accurate as some might think.

Are you 100% sure you used it perfectly? It’s based on pure math that stems from the factory tire pressure and builds upon the exact load rating a tire is physically built to carry at a certain pressure based on its characteristics….don’t see how it could be inaccurate.

I do see lots of folks use the calculator incorrectly. Also, tires are probably not as picky about perfect pressure anyways. A few psi low or high likely isn’t going to have a huge long term effect. There are also many people who don’t know how to chalk test properly either….so lots of variables. Not implying you don’t know how to chalk your tires or use the calculator, just asking.

And as stated earlier, 35 will be the minimum recommendation if using metric LTs because they are not rated below that.

The calculator is designed on the theoretical model of the tire ratings, not the tire.

Should be plenty close enough unless a tire is horribly out of spec.

It sets data points for ratings, how a manufacturer meets or exceeds those data points will vary.

It also ignores varying tire pressure based on road and load conditions.

THAT could be the case. OEM tires were a Load C range, and the ones I have now are E. Considering I fluctuate between D and E rated tires, the chalk test is fine for me.

If factory pressure was not a lot more than 35, and factory were LTs, if you upsized in LTs then it would make sense that you found 30 to be best. In that scenario the calc will not tell you to go below 35, due to liability. Larger tires need less pressure so eventually you hit the floor of 35 despite the larger tires probably needing less. Just a guess anyways but I’m assuming you upsized tires or else you’d probably run factory pressure.

I did. Factory was 32's, and I went to 34's.

Anyone able to fit a 255 in the stock spare location on a FIRST GEN with the factory hitch? The wings/mounts need to be modified of course which I already did somewhat to fit the 265's. Searched this thread and saw a couple first gen posts but not a ton of detail of what they did to make it work and if it ultimately cleared everything, including the differential during articulation.
