Rear end gone after New front and rear diff oil changed while on road trip!

I put in Mobil 1 75w90. Now 350 miles into a road trip with wife, dog, and infant son I’m hearing a rear end style gear noise. Well I jacked it up and it seemed to only be coming from one wheel. Maybe a brake drum issue? Did I screw myself by using the wrong oil? I topped the oil off. No leakage. Torqued to speck with new crush washers. When I had wife spin tires I could hear a clunk in the pumpkin but it seemed like drivetrain slack. WhenI two foot drove it made me confident it wasn’t the rear end because the noise would stop when the brakes were applied. Oh boy tomorrows going to be fun!

 

That is the correct oil weight. How many quarts did you put in? Should have been a little over 4. Are you hearing the noise from the pumpkin or the wheel side?

Oil is fine, unless you bought it on a garage sale.

 

Bad part is it’s going to be raining for ruger next good while and I’m not so bad off that I want to continuing diagnosing this in the rain so off to a shop…

 

I did it buy the books, well, a really well written thread on Tacomaworld, but oil is over 4 quarts, new crush washers, and pork ranch was used to torque down the vent and plug cap. The sound is not good, but I’m hoping with all of the math here that it is something else not as drastic, but it does not sound that way!

 

The pork ranch is the problem!

 

Hopefully its nothing bad, and an easy fix for ya… haven’t heard anyone have issues w mobil 1, amsoil, other w the rear diff.

 

Chicken ranch is better!

 

Stay with Jimmy Dean 75w-140 lard and all is good.

 

If you only have a noise coming from one wheel, start with that wheel. Wheel bearing would be my first suspect, followed by drum brake contamination/adjustment.

Don't overthink it. This does not sound like a typical diff problem.

 

Thanks for the advice. I believe the the drum had a piece of metal that was scraping the dust plate. After taking all the wheels off and putting it back together it no longer makes the noise so I’m pretty convinced it was that. Thank goodness and I’m going deeper into the road trip now.

 

Did you drop anything inside the diff when you did the oil change?

 

Try pulling the ebrake see what happens to the noise.

 

Well thats your issue.. Everyone knows the rear diff calls for regular blue cheese.

 

The drums on these trucks are pieces of shit. Internal components warp and stick all the time. Ask me how I know.

Toyota's argument is "they are adequate for the task" and they are not wrong...but goddam if discs aren't so much easier to fix/maintain. And the hell of it is the 4runners have discs on the same rear axle, so they're already making the damn parts!

 

Diff breather clogged?

 

The parking brakes on 4Runners are bigger pieces of shit.

Unfortunately Toyota designed the problem out in 4th gen by going to electric parking brakes. Watch that actuator go bad like ADD actuators...

 

If it is, you’ll know it when you see diff fluid dripping off the drums.
