Dashcam paid off last night.

Garmin Dashcam Mini 2. Caught this accident last night. Guy ran the light turning right and pulled right in front of the 1st Gen 5 lug. Everyone was ok but the kids 5 lug only had 80K miles on it and he was pretty heartbroken. Cops and the kid were pretty stoked I had video of it. Asshat in the Tesla that was the best witness of the accident bolted and drove through the whole accident scene (you can see them when I was trying to park to get out and assist).

I need to adjust my dashcam as I think it got bumped and is pointing a little high.

Ouch, rough night for the 1st Gen. For that camera, it's counterintuitive, but to max your field of view with the fish eye, you want to put those driving cars in almost the dead center horizontally. You will film quite a bit of your hood, but you will see more left to right, and are not really losing much by taking away some of the sky. I try to go down as far as I can get away with and still reliably see traffic signals.

 

That's usually how I have mine set up but I think it got bumped by my daughter who is learning to drive and probably hit it while adjusting the rearview mirror.

The resonator. I think it’s there due to the California regulations. Yes, it just occupies space. I will be removing it as well.

Yeah, he was trying to go around the Tesla from what I saw as well.

 

I think he meant the guy at fault that got hit turned right from the second lane over (which may be legal at this intersection) while blowing through the red light. Seems like you should have thrown on your hazards as you were pulling to the right to assist, after the accident.

Dashcams are good to have. I posted a thread about how mine acted in testament to the guy caused his own accident.

Garmin may have improved its product in the years since, but I my last experience with that product was "hard pass". The units spend 30 seconds showing the licensing screens when it should be showing the images immediately. GPS units can take 30 seconds on license screens but not dashcam. Also the unit had 1 and only 1 sensitivity for "detected impacts". A bad stretch of freeway triggered a done "accidents" within 12 miles and sensitivity cannot be adjusted.

I use a NextBase 522 GW because it does not have those limits. But if Garmin fixed the issues I hated, good for them.

 

Why did the driver of the truck attempt a "free right" from a lane that is NOT meant for free right, when cross-traffic has a green? I feel sorry for that driver and family (?) but your dashcam just made a case for negligence on their part ... unless I was seeing something incorrectly.

 

Hello I've got a dash cam mini also and have only been able to get 30 second recordings from it, did you change anything to get a video several minutes long?

 

I agree and saw that from the video as well. He was wrong on so many counts when he made that turn (wrong lane and against a red without stopping). He did say to the cops he was totally at fault and admitted it to the guy he hit.

Yeah, I should have put my hazards on but my turn lane and the one across were the only right of way based on the lights and I was more concerned with the people in the flipped truck.

 

I haven't changed any of the settings but did add a memory card as well. It runs from engine on to engine off.

 

Get a class 10 microSD that writes at 90+ mb/sec. 4K video is a flood and dashcams that record it usually depend on that write-rate to keep its sanity. My NextBase shuts down psychotic when a slower card is used.

Best Buy. A dozen of the shelf will work. Perhaps exactly 90 is not required (NextBase doco says 45 mb/sec) but 90 mb/sec is only about $5 more.
