Been using Pennzoil full syn platinum for about 40K miles (8 oil changes) with no issues. Cheaper than Mobil1

Used them for a couple of years in my 2nd gen. Absolutely overkill for that engine.

The 4.0 makes a leisurely 236 hp, doesn't rev high, and isn't turbocharged. Basic 5W30 dino oil is fine. Pennzoil Platinum is one of the best synthetic oils, overkill for this engine.

I used pennzoil platinum for about four years in both the civic and the tacoma with no issues, then they stopped having great sales with napa :(

If you wanna make your truck last then it is better to go with full synthetic oil than dino oil. I would never use dino for vehicle I wanna keep.

^Dino oil is fine if you change it every 6 months. Spend your money on paint and UV protection if you're in the south, and on rust protection if you're in the north. These trucks tend to die from causes other than engine lubrication-related issues.

appreciate everyones input. i just read somewhere that the penzzoil thats made from natural gas “burns” and others have had to keep adding oil to the engine but before other oils this was never a problem. seems silly to me but who knows. we will see. i change it every 3-5k miles (someones gonna roast me)

Any full synthetic oil will do. I used to get walmart’s SuperTech. I now get Havoline syn cause it comes in a 6-qt box. I put it all in and dont worry about storing leftover oil. I use oversize filters to take up that half quart - engine takes 5.5 qts with filter change.

Oh there will be some mods all right
I have been running that oil exclusively in all my vehicles. This video made my mind up for me. Project Farm is a fantastic resource for many things in life. He is not the end all be all but definitely worth your time. Plus they run rebates a lot that make it very affordable.

Overall, conventional protects roughly the same as synthetic. The benefit of synthetic is typically *slightly* better performance overall, but the real benefit is more stable performance over a wider range of temperatures and over the life of the oil (and sometimes better detergents/additives/etc.).

But again, a quality conventional oil made from good base stock will have similar overall performance to a quality synthetic made from a good base stock.

I've been using the Platinum and rarely ultra platinum for 10 years. I only have 67k miles, but engine consumes zero oil.

I like that idea... six quarts and a bigger filter. What part number do you use for the larger filter?
