wont start

I have a 1999 tacoma, 4x4 with a manual transmission. When i turn the key on it dosnt even light up the lights on the dash. I have replaced the battery, checked all the fuses and pulled out the ignition controler behind the key switch. I am wondering if there is something in the wiring that signals the key switch to work. something that it sends power to and has to have a return voltage to engage the other terminals on the ignition switch. Any ideas? Where might i get a wiring diagram?

Did you check for voltage to the key switch itself?

 

Or check the voltage on the battery? It could be the battery is deab, because the alternator could be bad and not charging the battery (since you said the battery was new).

 

If he swapped out the battery and the alternator was bad the truck would still start but wouldnt run for very long since all the juice would be coming from the battery. I don't think he's getting power either to the key switch or maybe through it.

 

Correct, but the alternator may have recently died or could of barely been working last and the battery could of had just enough voltage and over night (or sine the last time it was driven) could of died. Either way I would check battery voltage first.

 

If he replaced the battery with a new one and he still doesn't have any juice I don't know how he could have run it.

I don't think he has. But then again he hasn't thrown in anymore input so.... Who knows

 

make sure there is good connection to your battery terminals. there should be since u just replaced it

and its gonna be the alternator. my buddies 2000 tacoma just had the same symptoms. i didnt think that even if the alternator was bad that it wouldn't start, i just thought it wouldn't stay running

but we replaced the alternator and it started right up.

 

Weird. My friends car had a bad alternator but we were still able to start and drive it for 15 miles till we got it home. But then again that wasn't a toyota so it might have been wired differently.

 

This is my understanding also. I could be a Toyota thing. I know that the 4-runners with the hard top wouldn't run with out the bolts in (for the top) with the top on.

 

WTF?? Really? I guess that's toyota being safe But those things look sick without the top on and made into a trail rig.

 

yea we had to move his truck to my house so i used jumper cables and started his truck with mine. it ran but when we parked at my house, he turned it off and then it wouldn't start. so it did run though. then like i said new alternator and what do you it know ? it starts

Hells ya, I wish I could afford a trail rig.

 

Me too so much money tho. Especially if it's a dedicated trail rig.

I have 12.4 volts on the battery and the same at the key switch. I have replaced the electrical portion of the key switch and still have no power to turn the engine over nor to the lights on the dash or any beepers. I am wondering if the key switch sends a voltage to something else and in return receives a voltage to operate the remaining contacts at the switch. I guess it could be a computer problem or something but i do have full voltage at the ignition switch. Thanks for your time.

I would say check the starter relay. Make sure you have power going to it and switch the key switch on and make sure you have power coming out.

 

Like he said ^, check your connections.
