I have gotten used to using the sport shift mode in order to avoid the annoying shifting issues these automatic Tacoma's have. It is a lot better to drive when I have some say when the truck up and down shifts. My question is: Is a proper tune really that much different than what I'm doing manually? A tune is on my list but I'm super hesitant with a brand new truck due to warranty issues. I'd love to hear from those with tunes and from someone who is or might now a legit tuner in Northern CA(Bay Area)... Thanks

By copious do you mean too much?? lol
Really though, I've read a ton on tunes but cannot find any info comparing it to using the sport mode to shift.
Maybe I'm just not seeing it...

A quality tune is easily added to your truck and easily removed. Any legit tuner would allow you to try it out before you buy. My tune guy has done that many times and the number of people that asked to be put back to stock….zero. Going that route will give you the info you seek.

Yes, S-Mode helps you take back control from the engine and transmission ECU’s to some degree. From what I understand, a Tune will overwrite the stock tune, change the eco-shift points and make it drive like a more traditional old school vehicle. No need to fight for control anymore.

The ones on here that do nothing but flame don't bother me really. They got their own issues and I guess that's why they're here. You clearly understood what I was asking and yet you added nothing positive to the conversation. Thanks for stopping by though...

I just had mine tuned last week Sunday, with OTT tune. I was amazed at the difference with the truck now. Shifting super smooth. No gear hunting, on town or country road, and hwy. No lag on acceleration. I chose lit acceleration as main, and medium on ect. The offer lite, mild, medium, and spicy. You can mix and match, however you want. Well worth the price, could be happier, wish I would done it along time ago. Also with ect, and in S-mode it locks out 6th gear for towing. Get it done you'll be amazed by it.

P.s. I have a 2015 Lexus GS350 f- sport. The Tacoma is now just as fun to drive as that.

S-Mode is basically a gear limiter instead of a manual shifter. Most of the time going from D to S-Mode will put you in S4 but that doesn't mean you're always in 4th gear, only limited to 4th but the transmission can still automatically shift downt to 3rd, 2nd or 1st.

All you're doing is running it out and limiting upshifting by starting in S1, then S2 then S3 and so on. You leave it in S3 and come to a stop it will automatically downshift to first.

It's S-mode but you go ahead and call it what you want.

Appreciate the reply. I could really care less what the mode is called. People that lurk here for no other reason than to roast kinda took it and ran with it. In my wifes old Camry it WAS called sport mode and operated exactly the same and that's the only reason I called it that. I hear you on the down shifting, I really just use it to limit the excessive up shifts. And it works for that. Bottom line is I will be shopping for a tune. If anyone can point me in the right direction for the SF Bay Area I'd appreciate it

^^ This. Excellent explanation. When I tune a truck I don't collect payment until the client test drives it thoroughly so I make sure they are happy with both the performance of the tune and the throttle tip-in. I would agree with the comment about contacting your local tuner and trying it for yourself. You really have nothing to lose. If you don't like it they can flash you back to stock. I haven't had it happen yet though :)
