Using wax/sealant on wheels?

    So I have a lot of waxes and sealants laying around. Can I use them on my stock TRD OR wheels? Or should I use a wheel-specific wax/sealant?

    When I detail my truck, I use the detail spray wax to dry the truck and do the wheels with it also.

    Yeah, you can use your wax/sealers. Those wheels are painted/cleared so waxing them will look great.

    Sealants FTW. They can handle the heat a lot better than waxes. Your wheels do get warm from using the brakes. Heat has to go somewhere and it goes to the wheels.

    WheelWax is a decent product as well.

    Any wax will work great on wheels and it really helps repel brake dust.

    Carnauba boils at about 192°F (if I remember correctly), so a synthetic may last longer if your wheels get that hot.

    For a street car with hard braking the area around the hub may get 10 120 degrees on a warm day. Seeing that the OP is in PA I doubt his wheels will reach that temp.

    FYI on a 100 degree day in Texas or Florida the temp of the hood on a black car can be at 175 degrees.

    Armor All Wheel Protectant works reasonably well and is available at most retailers. It's essentially a wax with a propellant, which makes it convenient for wheels. Lasts for about three weeks, in my experience.

    We see surface temps like that in California as well. Wheel temps are hard to measure with my equipment because it is inaccurate on shiny surfaces.

    We sell a carnauba-based wax so I'm not trying to diss carnauba.

    BTW my boss has a black Cobra convertible...his leather seat was 181°F (measured with an infrared thermometer) on a day in the low 90's. Picture sitting on that with shorts. :eek:

    I've used poorboys wheel sealant,
    $21 collinite 845 insulator wax-easy to use carnauba+polymer wax sealant-high gloss shine+durable hydrophobic beading & long lasting paint protection for cars/boats/trucks/rvs & motorcycles (16 fl oz)
    collinite 845 and optimum opti-seal on wheels before and all have worked very well. Personally, moving forward, I will continue to use OptiSeal b/c its wipe on, walk away. Not that the others are really that difficult, but OS is just too easy and it protects equally as well, if not better.

    No diss at all on carnauba waxes. I have not found anything else that brings out the depth in a dark color car better than carnauba. Zaino comes really close and I still use it but top it off with two coats of Fuzion.

    I have read stories where detailers in the southern states have seen wax just melt off of the hood on a car. :eek:

    Collinite 845. Poorboys is no slouch either. A great bang for the buck.

    I hope to have time to detail my summer tire/wheels package on Thursday. They go on the Tacoma on Friday. I doubt that I will have the time for a full detail by Saturday but I shoukd be able to put another coat of Fuzion in the Tacoma by Saturday. There is a pretty decent size meet this Saturday in Maryland. This will be my first Tacoma meet.

    Thanks everyone for the responses. Seeing as how I have a baby now, I'm not able to wash my truck as often as I'd like so I'm trying to keep it looking good for as long as possible.

    Remember though, the wheel sealant/wax will not make brake dust/debris not stick, it just makes washing it off much easier.

    You and I are in the same boat. My son turns three months old tomorrow.

    I've been into detailing for several years, and I've found that doing a very thorough job once or twice a year (good polish, followed by a sealant) with regular maintenance (wash, dry, quick detailer) will keep the paint in excellent condition for a long time.

    I am suorised that you find the time for twice a year with a 3yo. My son is 11 and I usually only polish once a year.

    I've taken sick days in order to wash/wax my truck instead of doing it on a Saturday when the wife and kid are at home.

    It takes about five times longer than it did before he was born. Sometimes it's a break to change a diaper. Other times, it's just a break to sit with him and watch him smile.
