Do you frequently have an issue with things getting stuck, like your caps lock key?

Is the steering wheel turned and locked ? If so, try turning the wheel to take pressure from the locking device.

I had this problem several years ago on my 01 Taco. The problem got continually worse over a period of several years and eventually it got stuck several times in the ignition and I had to jiggle the shit out of it to get it out or to get it to turn. It ended up being a very simple fix.
Are the cuts on your key rounded off?
My old key had just worn down too much for the tumblers in the lock cylinder to recognize the key fully. I ended up getting the original key code and had some new keys made and the new ones worked like a charm. Your key code is on the lock cylinder on the passenger side door. You will have to pop off your door panel and grab a flashlight and look at the code on the side of the lock cylinder. Take that code to a locksmith and get a new one cut. Hopefully this is the same issue and helps :notsure:
Here's a crappy video that should help

Automatic shifter on the floor? Take the negative wire off the battery and the key will come out. Then replace the bushings in the shifter to solve this.

Dobbin, for what it is worth, using all caps is the equivalent of screaming at people.

Go to partsouq.com, enter your VIN, select "PowerTrain/Chassis" then look at the "Shift Lever/Retainer" information.
If you end up needing keys/cylinder, look in the "Body/Interior" section and there is a "Lock Cylinder Set" section.

The key is probably afraid to come out because you keep yelling.

if its not the key switch... its probably the shifter.

mine did this while i was working on it yesterday. didnt get the tab on the back of the shifter thing in the groove. soon as it was turned into the right spot. problem solved!

easy test to see if its the shifter: will it change positions without pushing the button down? if so ? thats it.

Are you typing while holding down the shift key the entire time, and just missed it here? Or using capslock and accidentally hit shift for the 'i'?

I work in AutoCAD all day, and often start typing in all caps for emails ect before realizing caps lock is on out of habit.

Dont give a rats ass about tense or caps......everything is left of center these days....

If you cant get the key out.....and have manual tranny.....those bushings in the shifter is first to check...

Other than that first check the simple things.....

My Toyota Corolla Key Is Stuck in the Ignition – What to Do? (vehq.com)

IF none of these .....then the key is over worn....
Or worst scenario the lock cylinder is disintegrating and key wont turn all the way offf......risk having to pull the bat cable just to turn truck off......
they dont fail when the key goes in...its when you try to get it out.....

If cylinder pins wear too far.....and key remains stuck(no off) then you have to drill the cylinder out from behind and under dash...to get assembly apart...so it will come off the steer column......major PIA.....suggest replacing lock cylinder every 150K or so......nothin lasts forever....

There's videos on how to drill it out.....what a bitch......

When you replace that cylinder...take it to a proper locksmith before install and they can rekey that new cylinder to match the old door keys.

All lock pins go dry after sometime.....on commercial deadbolts some lithium lube makes right....

However because the tACOMA cylinder drains right into the ignition switch....consider carefully.....
even conductive graphite is not a good option.....
