2004 Tacoma, 51,000 miles. Toyota wouldn’t replace rusted frame. Current investigation going thru NHSA. Say make take months. Vehicle deemed unsafe do to frame deteriorations, snake oil from dealer didn’t stop Rust from eating the frame. I found a donor frame in good shape having it acid dipped, then hot dipped Galvanized. The way Toyota should’ve done these. Hope my complaint with NHSA pays back. 4/22/2023

yes indeed lets force Toyota out of the American market.

Toyota went beyond most all manufactures .

A clear problem of industrial sabotage applied after the vehicles left the assembly plant.

What does it cost to have the frame acid dipped & galvanized?

nice low miles Taco! & thats a fine looking frame you picked up!

your old frame looks a lot like mine did before all the patchwork.

now as to that replacement by toyota: wasnt there a window for frame replacements? had to be done before X date?

the senior members here will have the good info.

The last new 1st gen frame (supposedly in existence) was purchased by a member on here last year I believe.

You have an 18 year old truck. Not sure what filing a complaint accomplishes. It is well known/documented that 1st gen Tacomas had frame rot issues.

Yup, and it doesn't happen overnight either. You've gotta ignore a lot for the rust to get that bad.

Mine was replaced by Toyota in the spring of 2020 I doubt there were many more done after that.

Toyota had frame rot issues from the back in the 80s but no one did anything about it back then now it seems like all mfg have frame rot issues. Definitely something to do with metal. And definitely putting brine on the roads today does way more harm then good! brake lines fuel lines trans lines even the roads are falling apart and we hardly have any snow here in NJ

It all started with the fuel saving idea to meet epa standards of boxing the frame ( allowing a lighter over all frame) to keep most of the slop inside with drain holes much to small .

The eighties Toyota`s were not any worse the what one would expect in a 15 year old winter chemical rust belt state

My C channel frame on my 1976 K-20 was perfect in 2000 but the body and engine was shot then I was hard core Toyota be then.

As a squarebody chevy fan it always seemed funny that cab swaps are common on those trucks but on the tacomas everyone seems to be swapping frames.

Little set back, needs sand blasting prior to Galvanized as will galvanized won’t stick to Paine, and acid wash doesn’t remove paint.

Is there any market for aftermarket frames? I build chassis's for a living, and have been tossing around the idea of starting to build frames for first gen tacos and possibly second/3rd gens further down the road. The said frames would be fully boxed mandrel bent 2x4 sectioned into 2x5 all .120 wall thickness with laser cut mounts and brackets.

I plan to build myself at least one, but if the demand is there, could easily build a jig table to produce more.

Toyota has had this frame problem now for two decades. I would like to think they would have addressed it by now. I think what the OP is doing is smart in getting the frame galvanized. Why doesn't Toyota think of that? While I do think it's great the Toyota has stood behind a lot of these frame replacements, I would think it would be less costly to manufacture the frame right from the get go than have to pay to have thousands of frames replaced under "warranty". Don't misunderstand. I love Toyota products, but this frame problem is a big disappointment. I had a 2000 Tundra that I purchased new when I lived in PA, after moving to AZ, I got the recall notice to have the frame inspected. The Toyota dealer said it passed their inspection (no perforations), but I could see the frame was rusting, and it left rust stains on my driveway. So I traded it for the 2006 Tundra I had before the Taco.
