If you could find a good used professional grade ZT, that'd make the yard job easy, a 42" deck would be plenty for the yard, but if you're going to mow the field I'd want a 60" deck.

As a person that hunts up commercial zero turn machines, consider a 54". They are more common than a 42". There are some 48" commercial units out there, and they go for a decent price, but they are a bit more rare.

Most consumer versions are going to be smaller. Please ask us here if you find something that interests you.

I'm in the middle of a Kohler command rebuild. It's kicking my ass!

After honing & rings it runs amazing! Unfortunately it smokes horrible! Ring gaps were within spec.

Taking it apart for the 3rd time. Hoping it's just the valves/valve guides/ valve seals.

Kinda want this one down the road.

I got a cat bugging me for a decent ZT. I like to fix them, beat the shit out of them, then peddle them.

I'm not liking having to report in the progress of MY mower rehab!

Banner day for the bank account! Took advantage of the mulch sale at Home Depot and got 25 bags. Also bought my first chainsaw. Picked up the Stihl MS180 at a local outdoor equipment shop. After watching a bunch of YouTube videos and reading reviews, I decided the 180 was the best option for me. I’m not doing anything heavy duty and only should have to use it a handful of times per year. It seems like a decent little saw for the price.

I also got a PPE kit with the helmet/mesh screen, chaps, gloves, and safety glasses. Look forward to using my new saw soon!

The 180 is a great saw. I have a 170 which is my go do for small work, light and has enough power. Good call on getting all the PPE I took the mesh off my helmet after a few years. Started to rust and in certain sunlight it’s blinding.

These fuelies have a CEL. Pretty basic, but a light non the less.

This unit, the light was broken just behind the LED resistor. I soldered it back together.

This way I can do the key on/ key off/ key on/ key off/ key onPXL_20230416_201217248.jpg , test and count the flashes to see what codes are stored .

I serviced our Ariens Ikon XL-42 yesterday; oil/filters/plugs/deck stuff. (I did the hydro units last year; they have filters and a pretty long service interval.) It has the Kohler engine, and the drain plug is in an absolutely horrid location, so I use a vacuum pump to pull the oil out through the dipstick tube. Not that it helps a lot; the oil filter is right next to the drain plug and it is literally impossible not to make a mess under the machine when changing it. After owning the machine for a few years at least now I know where the mess will be and can be ready for it.

I buy a kit from Kohler that contains everything needed, including a foam pre-filter the machine didn't have when it was new. I swear by those on mowers so I was happy to add it. I usually just clean them and re-use them but since there's a new one in the kit I just throw the whole works on there.

The blades were amazingly sharp still, which surprised me; the deck didn't need cleaning either. Made the job a lot less of a pain this year. I'll take it!

    Update:

Replaced intake valve seals on both heads (exhaust valve does not have seals).

Amazed that a small rubber seal could make that much of a difference. Found the #2 head intake seal was brittle. Swapped out the seal and the smoking is gone!

There is still the normal smoking present when idling down, but that is normal for Kohler engines. They don't have an exhaust seal so when you go to idle the vacuum increases and you pull oil into combustion chamber.

Was able to get the Fuelie back in the chassis today. Found so many things that make you think WTF!

#1 the unit had a bad voltage regulator.
#2 a connector that goes to the throttle positioner sensor was unplugged.
#3 The charging line from the voltage regulator was spliced with a 16 gauge wire. From the factory these are 12 gauge.
#4 a ground wire for the fuel injectors was found un landed.

Issues that I was not aware of until today:

The center baffles are missing along with the #2 head baffles

Besides the missing baffles, the machine seems to run smoke free (except when coming off max RPMs). Am looking forward to beating the crap out of this thing.

Vid for anyone that gives a shit.

I pulled the exhaust on the Fuelie.

Switched the orientation of the O2 sensor ( actually a temp sensor) to the correct location. It should heat up faster being located between the exhaust pipes directly off the heads. Between the exhaust sensor and the oil temp sensor, the rig should go into closed loop much quicker.

I'm never wanting to weld on thin gauge iron, but I think this will work just fine.PXL_20230418_165305019.jpg PXL_20230418_172136019.jpg PXL_20230418_173023168.jpg PXL_20230418_173023168.jpg PXL_20230418_192354533.jpg

20230418_175159.jpg 20230418_174622.jpg did about 9hrs chipper time last weekend. did 4 piles like pictured and raked. this tool paid for itself last year. would buy again. DR brand products are a pain to get parts from (website sucks) but the tools are great. only choice on american made/manufactured which was and is a priority of mine. too wet to burn and this makes sweet forest compost/trail fodder. for 1500$ id be amazed if theres a better unit to be had.

What do you guys think about this? He says it works but has intermittent smoke belching. I am pretty handy DIY. Have some full motor rebuilds on motorcycles

Thats a fuel injected model. Pretty nice units. I'm actually rehabbing it's twin. I'd grab it for that amount of money.

I'm gonna abandon this thread. I'll continue to post in the shop time thread.

I'm sure the OP will be perfectly fine with that.
