With the amount of idiocy with drivers on Michigan roads, that sounds like an extremely petty reason to pull someone over in this state. Maybe he hates Tacomas, and his life.

Your plate can't be obstructed. There's case law regarding ball hitches in your bumper covering the plate. They can't pull you over for that. But I think technically he was within his rights to do so here.

You'd be surprised at how many things are illegal in the motor vehicle code. You'll never get stopped for many of them, but they're in there nonetheless and they're just as valid of a stop.

Obstructed plate, technically. I've never run into the issue, myself though. But the stop also tells other drivers in the area that they're present, especially if it's a problem area. And also shows his boss that he's doing something.

Probably the most common ones I see that people either don't care about or don't think is illegal include front window tint, multiple registration tabs visible, turning into the wrong lane when there's more than one lane for a set direction, LED light bars exposed, LEDs/HIDs showing colors other than yellow/amber up front or red in the rear. There's plenty more too.

Where I'm from, cops sit on street corners with automatic plate scanners to catch people with expired plates, unreadable plates, parole violations, outstanding arrest warrants, etc. The scanner probably gave an error when your truck passed by.

Probably depends where he's from. Most agencies can't afford things like that and you'll likely only find them in big cities and metro areas.

Safe bet a Tacoma owner isn’t going to cause trouble on the stop either, the officer was making a “business decision”.

I run plate (smoked) covers and I should probably switch to clear ones.
We have shitty vinyl wrapped, not painted plates and our province refuses to move to the 21st century and make plastic ones...so here I am. Haven't been pulled over for them...yet.

You know what they say about assuming. But sounds like he didn't get a ticket and was sent on his way so all is well.

Michigan uses the same plates. Personally, I prefer the look of them to ones from other states (Indiana comes to mind). But the cheap white ones that you get from Secretary of State seem to peel after about 5-10 years. The other designs less so, but you're supposed to get a new plate after 10 years anyway.

I pull them off every year and remove the old tags, paranoid… also use a razor and cut lines in the tags. It’s probably not a thing here but in other states, the more tags, the easier to steal. Also run security screws. The plate here stays pretty clean since we only run the rear. A couple of coats of wax, front and back, each year, goes a long way.
The blue old school look plate is nice.

I spend most of my work weeks in Windsor Ont, so I see an influx of Michigan plates in town. I have to say I love the Blue/Yellow reto plate.

Yea he had the cause pull me over… as people are saying here there are a lot of laws on the book that I’m sure I am not aware of. And he did give me a warning. But whatever… just seems like bs to me. I mean if I had a trailer my plate would have been obsucured.. but I’m sure there is law for that also.

It was a Friday. Friday traffic is horrible. I can't blame him for grabbing some low hanging fruit. LEO just don't make enough money to spend their time trying to ticket someone pushing the speed limit on 96west. No rea would I be standing on the side of the x way writing someone up knowing many of the people leaving the area had a 3 martini lunch.

Nope. You just helped him finish his shift so he could go home safely to his/her family.

Your trailer needs a plate too, but it would be understandable that your trailer would be blocking your main plate. Personally, I think the 1up rack stop is a bit chicken-shit, but valid nonetheless.

Always a back seat QB. You'd be surprised at the amount of stuff that they can get from a seemingly minor stop. All kinds of "actual crime."

I understand that routine traffic stops can result in finding people with warrants, drug trafficking, etc BUT this particular situation it seems like he could have done better to find someone speeding, or perhaps a vehicle with illegal tint or a vehicle that is unsafe and should not be on the road, something to that effect rather than just a license plate being covered by a bike mount.

Well, with nothing but respect, it will have to be an agree to disagree situation. It is my belief that traffic stops like the one we are all talking about are a waste of time, effort, and money. Someone driving a vehicle with no obvious safety issues at a safe speed should not be pulled over because of a recreational item that obscures the plate. I mean when it snows 3/4 of everyone's plates are obscured, driving on wet gravel side roads covers it, and as mentioned above towing a trailer would obscure the plate as well. It's just such unbelievably low hanging fruit it really puts a sour taste in my mouth. I still appreciate police and all they do for us but situations like this will always rub me the wrong way.
