What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Speaking of steering.

Dropped by Yota1 today to pick up some replacement (hub) studs for the rear axle build, and some other odds and ends. There were a couple broken hub studs on the Toyota Truck IFS hubs I bought... easy fix.

But these were hanging there on the shelf and calling out to me.



Gotta love buying parts for the next project before you're halfway done with this project.



And also... Brown Santa brought me more goodies from Front Range Offroad.

 

And for the record... I really can not say enough good things about Yota1. That shop is top notch. The people there are outstanding.

If you need parts, they have all sorts of OEM. They can get most any OEM. And they build some bad assed Yota motors too.

 

How much were those steering clevis’?

It's gotten a little bit looser. I just did a trip ,about 300 road miles and about 200 offroad

I think this is more of what I'm running into. You have to be really careful correcting. Wherever you look is were your gonna go.

Got some 255/85/16 st maxxes today.



They’re replacing km2’s, so we’ll see how they stack up over the next year or so

 

For the ongoing effort to track down some noise/clunk/itre movement on the drivers side of my steering rack, I first tried adding some torque to the rack guide nut. It did work to eliminate the the clunk and vertical movement but it changed how the steering felt. A bit stiffer and it did not want to return to center on its own.

So yesterday I tore into to rack to replace the rack guide. I am not sure what to make of what I found. The grease in there was in pretty bad shape.



I was expecting some damage to the original guide, but after cleaning it up, it does not seem damaged.

Even though the old rack guide cleaned up pretty nice, I did not reuse it.



Internals of the rack cleaned up as much as possible.



I got as much of that old grody grease out of there. Then repacked it with some fresh grease and reassembled.

The FSM calls for 18 ft.lbs of torque, then back off 19° of a rotation of the nut. This is a challenge since that torque is hardly any torque at all. I ended up not doing the -19° thing.

Steering is now very smooth and quiet and returns to center as it should. Time will tell if this is a permanent fix or not. I know that @Dan8906 got this far and it did not fix his situation

 

I’m glad it worked out so far for you, my grease did not look that bad at all, but I took the same approach, cleaned out as much as possible and re greased with no luck.

Isn't your rack fairly new too? Like didn't you replace at some point?

 

Yeah, relatively new. Replaced it 5 years ago. It now has ~65K on it. Not that much considering the one it came with went 175K.

 

1st real start with the new Haltech tune and the turbo kit installed (minus charge pipes, waiting on my intercooler)

How much of my Idle section did you copy?

 

0%, didn't mess with idle control at all since August of last year when it was on stock injectors and whatnot. I'll try some of your values tomorrow when I get the rad in and can run longer.

 

Trans go kit complete this weekend.. pending drive results is all...

 

Finally got around to replacing the lower window weatherstrip. $47 for both from Rock Auto, I’m super happy.

 

nice man. Can't wait to see it done.

 

It's taken me longer than I'd have liked but it's been good to reseal the engine and get everything fit up without working in tight spaces. I'm excited, I plan to bring it to Wyo in June.
