I haven’t found a 4.0 blow up thread with anything remotely comparable to the 3.5.

I doubt a tune would prevent a blow up.
It “might” save the automatic transmission from some wear.

Cam phaser breakages, head gaskets, timing chain stretches……
The 4.0 is a good engine, but they all have their faults.

I’ve replaced a fair few timing chains on 4.0s. Granted usually from neglect.

5.7l driver side tensioners too…. Those suck

People love to brag about how the 1FZ is a million km motor but doesn’t change the fact that most people dumped them when the HG blew at 100-200k

I have come to peace with the fact my engine won’t last forever.
Nothing last for ever, use it while you got it. Take care of it, and you’ll get to use it longer:thumbsup:

I’ve already got plans on a 2gr swap in my 95 if the 482k mile 5vz ever kicks the bucket… having 5 trucks with the 5vz gets old… and I’m loving the 2gr in my mr2 lol

you’re coming across as insecure about your 3.5. I like it to but won’t pretend like it’s the better motor

It’s not an insecurity (more ignorance) it’s your failed argument around a negative proof. Negative proofs are used by trolls and that’s all this discussion is as you haven’t brought any empirical evidence to your argument other than your opinion.

The “prove me wrong” nonsense is boring and overplayed.

The 3.5 has more parts. And is more complex.
That amounts to more potential for problems.
The 4.0 is by all intents, old technology.

The third gen has sold better than any Tacoma generation. Toyota never moved 200,000 plus units of the second gen, they have moved 200,000 plus units for the past five years with the third gen. More Tacoma’s sold means you’re likely to see a higher percentage of problems on the internet. Not to mention Tacoma world traffic is probably much higher now than it was pre 2015. The 3.5 is the same as the 4.0, both will last 300,000 miles or more with the correct maintenance. It’s the end of the third gen lifecycle with the 4th on the way. There’s overwhelming evidence the 3.5 is reliable enough for Tacoma standards. Chances are most owners will trade theirs in before they accumulate the miles these engines are actually capable of. If you want a tune get it. There are plenty of owners with tunes who have no problems. But I have a feeling your real intention starting this thread was to feed the trolls.

So if this is your first Tacoma how do you know all the other generations were so good? Actual use of a vehicle versus reading on the internet where people never embellish anything is a better way of knowing a vehicle.

You are looking at the issues on a forum. As stated most people come to forums when they have a problem.

Instead of shit talking the 3.5, maybe you should have bought one of the second gens that you think are bulletproof. You are trying to get a rise out of people against the motor that is in their trucks that they paid for ie trolling. If you don’t like the 3.5 trade it when the new model comes out or if you really want reliable get the four banger.

No reason to say the same thing multiple times different ways. If there is something specific that you need to hear someone say about the 3.5 then just come out and ask instead of fishing. I’m sure you can find at least one person to say what you need to hear.

And as far as the 3.5 not being good and reliable, I think @bigoldbeef might have something to say about that.

4.0L fail all the time. There’s a junkyard full of ‘em down the road from me. Failure rate is confirmed at 1.76X the failure rate of the 3.5L per-capita.

I think it’s extremely rare but amplified by people worried about it happening to them in the future
