As the title of this post says, I am having issues with my radio and I'm hoping someone can give me a solution because unfortunately, the Toyota dealerships near me have clueless techs that are lazy and give me the same answer every time I show up to the dealership.

When I'm listening to music, I use apple carplay and I don't know if it's the radio, the cable, my phone, or that apple carplay software is garbage. But every time I start my car and I want to turn the radio down when I load up apple carplay, it doesn't work. The steering wheel buttons don't work, the radio volume knob doesn't, and I can't skip the song either. It takes at least 5 minutes for the radio to kick in and actually start working. On a good day, maybe a minute or two. is there any solution to making my radio work instantly when I start my car?

Have you tried a hard reset? Pressing both the volume and tune knobs and holding them for about 3 seconds. It fixes most minor issues.

No, I have not actually. They also told me to do a hard reset by removing my phone from my car's radio but I don't need to because I use apple carplay which just goes through the apple charger. Any other solutions? Thank you by the way.

I gave up on the stock Toyota head unit. It had so many bugs with my iPhone. Sometimes the BT would connect. Sometimes not. Sometimes it would connect and I could start/stop/switch music, but the sound would only come out of my phone's speakers. It became such a hassle that I bit the bullet on an aftermarket head unit.

The first thing with any carplay/AA is to try a new high quality cable. In your case make sure it is an apple certified cable. The cable itself seems to be the single biggest cause of various issues.

I will say that mine is slow to respond to volume commands on startup but nowhere near that timeframe, maybe 10 seconds at most

I am using an apple certified cable, it is my second one because the first one I used was a little old. Took it right out of the iPhone box. I've tried everything with the cables and looked at all the settings and what not. I have no clue what to do. My best bet is to do the hard reset. How much did an aftermarket unit cost?

Aftermarket pricing is all over the map, depending on what is important to you and whether you want to retain steering wheel controls. I went higher end and wanted satellite radio and steering wheel controls. I installed it myself. I think I was into it about $1600 all in, but you can find good units with CarPlay for like $400-$600. Look around on Crutchfield.com for a good starting point.

Is it possible that it's the phone that needs a reset? At least in the Android Eco-system, it used to be that when upgrading the operating system, sometimes the update would cause flakey behavior that could only really be solved by performing a reset on the device post-update.

I'm not an iPhone / iPad / iOS person admittedly, so a few things less drastic you might try.

The first is to forget the BT pairing on your device and re-pair.
Is Apple Car Play also an install on iOS? If so, uninstall and re-install then repair again.
See if there is an SW update available for the head unit, download, and install.
See if there is an iOS update for the phone and if so, download and install.
See if anything here or otherwise via Google is experienced by others: https://discussions.apple.com/threa...fix this issue you,and then adjust the volume.

Try your hard reset on the head unit and forgetting the phone. It's a '22 so it ought to still be under warranty.

I’d keep on top of the dealer if it continues..
My radio clock always seems to gain up to 7 minutes after a month.. I’ll have to try that reset.

I've purchased alleged "Apple Certified" cables that have been total crap. When I need a new one I buy the actual Apple brand OEM cables and never have an issue. More than I can say for those certified ones. It may be worth a shot.

Anyone find a solution? I'm fighting the same problem...volume knob/steering wheel volume control won't work about 1 out of 3 times I start the truck when using CarPlay. Usually unplugging the cable fixes it, but not always. Very frustrating.

As an FYI, I deleted the personal data on my ‘23 OEM non-JBL unit today and immediately received do you want to upgrade software msg. Replied yes and several similar random Apple car play issues went away after the software was updated

Well I updated my new iPhone 14 to the latest software, updated the head unit and reinstalled the connection. Still no luck :(

I am also having intermittent issues with Apple Car Play working. Seems everything else is working properly, but the ACP does not load up all the time. I have also tried different cords (even Apple Original cords) along with different phones. I will try to reboot as others have suggested and see what happens.
