OV Tune -2GR-FKS failure?

Agreed along with the other thread OP had started.

I have a 4runner with the 4.0 and a Tacoma with the 3.5. I actually prefer the characteristics of the 3.5 and it doesn't have a tune.

7 years and counting with no issues on that engine.

 

My 160,000 mile Chrysler 392 Hemi see’s redline every day I drive it. If the 3.5 can’t do the same it’s a turd.
That said, I’m quite sure a 3.5 is a reliable because mine sees redline everyday as well.

Engines fail, good and bad ones. Unless a tuner was reckless with timing and AFR’s I highly doubt it was the cause.

 

Ive taken good engine's past 230k ive also taken the "problematic" Auto transmissions attached to those engines past 230k. There is no substitute for good maintenance practices and while you may have problems you can sleep well at night knowing you did the best you could. Life goes on.

In my experience once you get past 180k mark and 12-15ish years its price to upkeep starts increasing per year.

I also dont know the life expectancy of the soy based wiring sleeves. nothing like having things engineered to fail by the greenies.

 

Same bs with the tons and tons of incorrect information spewed around about the 6.2 and 6.5 V8 diesel engines. I still have a 6.2 and had a 6.5TD

 

Lots of assumptions based on social media observations and zero real world data.

 

I sold my 97 with 300k on the OG gasket! It's still being driven last I heard.

 

Ha of course it did. I think the last surviving examples are mostly in the 200k-300k with a mixed bag of original HGs and replaced. I bought my 94 that had a blown HG at 150k and I put a brand new OEM engine it, regeared the TC, rebuilt the axles, etc so it essentially has a brand new drivetrain.

 

Nice. Mine was my mother in laws since new, then she gave it to me when she was tired of oil leaks. I did a lot of work to make it a daily driver, but eventually needed something that didn't need work quite so often. Wish I could have kept it! I still have my Suzuki Samurai though!

 

I will agree that the 4.0 is a better engine mainly because it has less of the environmental turd designs. The tranny I will not agree with as I know both trannys are overbuilt and will outlast most any tranny out there. The problem with the newer tranny is in the programming. Sounds like a good tune totally changes the operation and along with good maintenance will likely outlast the rest of the truck. I wish I could get the 4.7 engine and tranny combo. . . . . I know that will outlast the rest of the truck.

 

Everyone shits on the 2017's. .. I just turned 105,000 ( knock on wood) with a full service history and mostly highway miles on a Valley Runner tune the past 20,000

 

My 2020 3.5 v6 auto is 100% stock, and runs and shifts perfect. My 4.7 tundra was good too, and that is still running today with over 300k miles. I expect the same with this 3.5. Unless there's some inherent issue with all these 3.5 v6's, I can't see it happening. Usually it's when you go beyond the factory parameters the engineers have set for these trucks, thats when chit can happen.

 

The way I read it was he did not have it tuned, but wonder if a tune with its smoother shifting would help the tranny. I might be wrong, but thats what I thought I read

I think the 3.5 gets a bad rap from impatient owners that don't break in those engines, and transmissions properly.

 

more baseless claims. Of the million, or well more out there, some are still hung up on the 3 that blew up. As the dealer techs have said,,, everyone has a few failures, even the most reliable of brands have much worse numbers.

 

Since the engines have gone through the break-in process at the factory, drained the break in oil then filled up with Mobil 1 oil good for 10k miles.

 

Well, maybe I didn't word it right. I'm thinking it's the way these automatics are driven from the time they're very new with low miles. I hear all this stuff about using the ECT and S modes instead of just putting in the D mode, and driving them till these trucks straighten out. It's what the dealers service manager told me when I picked up the truck on day 1. You just need to be patient, and put up with the gear hunting. Btw, no need to change your oil every 100 miles either.

 

I'm not sure using ECT or S mode is a factor... I would also take what a service advisor tells you with a grain of salt. I doubt they've polled the people with 3GT engine problems and determined that's the cause. And surely not enough to have accurate statistics at only one dealership.

 

Well, they sell, and service the product, I would think some know a bit more than Joe blow off the street about their vehicles. I took their advice for the first 1k miles except towing...I needed my truck for a job I promised my brother. Other then that, really happy the way the truck performs. I've been in the service industry with electronics till retirement. You wouldn't believe the number of people that think they know more about what's wrong with a product when it fails then the tech servicing it.
