Would I be ok to use the Stock wheel and upgrade to bigger a tire only? Or would I have to upgrade both the tire and wheel?

Honestly you don't have to unless you're going up to 33-34"+

If just going to less than 33" just run a standard spare and swap it to the front when/if a puncture happens.

Steel rims are usually more narrow, so 265 would be max (limiting to 32") or run a 255/75r16 (33")

Do you plan on long adventures? Or just standard fare stuff?

If you keep the stock tire, why would you need to upgrade the wheel? Are you adding secondary shocks or spindle gussets?

Because I have 33s, and I'd like to have a full size spare. Just wasn't sure if I could keep the stock tire and just get a new wheel instead of getting a new wheel and tire

Ya I have 33s, I'm just finally getting around to getting a full size spare. And ya I go on longish trips, usually no more than a week

You want to keep the stock 31" spare tire but get a bigger wheel i.e. from the 16x7" steelie to a 16x8" or 16x9" alloy wheel?

Bro what are you trying to do?

please do not try and STRETCH a tire onto a wheel it’s not made for.

I was able to put a larger tire on my stock spare wheel 255/85/17

Still the tires were made to fit a 17” wheel

I'm trying to see if it's possible to keep the stock spare rim, then get 33" wheel to fit on the spare rim.

"Wheel" and "rim" are the same thing :smack:

Looks like you want to know if a 33" tire can fit on the stock spare steel wheel. A 255/85-16 tire will fit. A 285/75-16 tire will not fit.

I think you mean tire. Yes, a 33” tire can be installed on the spare steel rim. The stock spare tire needs to be removed from the stock spare rim.

Why would a 285/75 not fit? Isn’t the spare 16x7?

I looked through a few 285/75-16 tires on TireRack and they require a 7.5-9.0" or 7.5-9.5" wide wheel.

Interesting. Once again, discount tire’s website does not reflect what the manufacturers show.

    I'm confused.

What rim ( wheel) diameter do you have?

What tire diameter do you want to install on that rim (wheel)?

They need to be the same.

I'm running a 17x8.5 and 285/ 70R17, not sure what the stock spare size is, just trying to figure out if it's even ok to do

Stock size is 265/70R16 or 31".

I'm on 35s and carry a 32" spare. Drove 300 miles home on the spare once at normal highway speeds. No issues other than having to hold the steering wheel a bit off-center. Adaptive cruise may or may not work. That's a 3" difference in tire diameter. Your 2" difference in tire diameter should be ok.
