Could become a very interesting situation if radiation does escape the containment. IE.. Air/wind currents or dispersal into the oceans/tides. Im following how it unfolds. I have 4 friends stationed over there, and they say its been VERY busy.

Well....some people are reporting less radiation now after the explosion, otehrs are reporting that levels are 1000 times higher. Japan has began issueing iodine tablets for residents.

Can I have your boat? I would want to pick it up BEFORE the radiation reaches it though.

So the plant is "leaking" radiation right now? I haven't been following the news, can you fill me in?

PS: I got the pic from another Toyota Forum.

By no means a radiation expert but I do have some radiation experience. We use a few hundred nuclear gauges at work. Radiation and degredation go hand in hand. Slowly it would and does dissipate. Little known fact, the earth itself emits radiation, always has, just at such low miniscule amounts that it is negligable on the environment.

Edit: All depends how much was released I guess

Currently, last I heard, the plants are NOT leaking radiation. It's just an option for them to release some in controlled amount to relieve stress on the reactor.

We just heard again that levels have increased. Japan is now at "Code Red" for the plant, whatever that means, but generally, "Code Red" isnt a good thing.....

The part of the Oilsands I work with, has near all the same equipment. Steam generators to make the electricity, water treatment systems to ensure pure water. Only difference is where we use Fired boilers to make the steam, nuclear plants use the massive heat generated during the nuclear degredation process to make steam. Nuclear fuel is ALWAYS degrading, thats how the heat is produced.

As an educated guess. I know a boiler explosion can take out a blast bunker. Google image search "Boiler explosions" and you'll see what I mean.

The issue is Heat creates pressure and pressure creates heat, its VERY easy for this process to run away from you. Thats why we have safety features out the ass and ALL of those features are 2 level redundant, and most are even 3rd level redundant for safety.

Don't panic just cause someones saying the word "Nuclear", but it is a very serious situation.

Im not in panic mode. And I understand the redundancies built into these things. The only thing that concerns me, I have worked at a nuke plant, and am well aware of the shit that gets covered up. That being said, I dont think this is worse than Chernobyl, and for that matter, We had "3 mile island" a few decades ago, that we survived just fine. :)

Haha, just a funny story about nuke cover-ups. You know those hand held nuke storage cells for testing piping thicknesses? I've heard probably half a dozen stories in my career about those nuke sources going missing.

This situation is going to hurt all of us... Not necessarily physically, but economically/financially. If Japan decides to reduce their amount of nuclear power plants because of one incident, they will require more foreign oil/coal/natural gas, which means rising energy costs and a bidding war for oil for us here in the US (and our northern neighbors). Also, all opponents of nuclear energy here in the US will use this incident as a "poster-child" for their non-nuclear agenda, meaning more dependence on fossil fuels.

Either way, prayers sent for all folks involved in this tragedy. :(

Anyone know what year 3-mile island incident happened?
