Lots of “4.0 is waaay more reliable than the 3rd gen 3.5”!

    Maybe.
    Maybe not.

If we’re talking about legendary Toyota motor reliability, might I suggest the 22RE for your next truck?

I had 340k on a 1996 3.4 with no issues ever, pulled the motor still running, and sold it used to swap a 4.7 in. Put another 150k on the V8.

You really can’t go wrong with anything Toyota.

(Excerpt maybe the head gasket on a 3.0).

They don't. Most service advisors I've talked to exhibit no knowledge of automotive whatsoever. They are essentially service salesmen. The techs over in the shop are the only ones who know anything. At least, at dealers I've been to.

Personally I think it should be a requirement that service advisors have a history of being a tech/mechanic previously, but I imagine that would limit the applicant pool too much so they have to open the position up to random people who don't know shit about automotive.

The 22RE in my 1986 toyota 4wd pickup sheared a crankshaft key. To me it wasn't so legendary at 40k miles, but toyota sent their engineer up from new jersey to look at it determining it was a metallurgical failure. I had a new crank installed within a week, all at n/c.

Not the service adviser, or writer. This was their head service manager, or likely senior tech that oversees all the other techs in the service department. He was present with the sales manager when I picked up my tacoma explaining what the truck had, and how to use it.

Sounds like the absolute best possible resolution to a mechanical failure! Toyota not only covered the repair but were interested in determining root cause to address their own design and manufacturing.

    Legendary!

All the time I thought toyota wanted to keep goodwill with myself, and family, as we had bought new Toyotas for years.

Whats adviser, head tech or toyora say abt 040 white paint on tacomas? A tune will improve the trans shifting better than anything else.

I think this is hilarious. I don’t have tune and I can’t say I have one issue with this truck . It drives totally fine . I’ve also driven newer years and again fine. All this is just chatter going back and forth . Respect your vehicle and it will take care of you. I change my oil every 5 k miles . I really don’t care if people think that’s too often or it actually is too often . It’s what I do. I changed my diff fluids at 15 k miles and my transfer at 20. Trans I will do soon also . I’ve done that with all my vehicles and they have
Went over 200 k with no issues . My beater car is a 2005 Corolla with 240 k and it does not use any oil.
It’s all about maintenance 100 percent, and if you don’t need to beat it up don’t. The Tacoma is not a sports car so don’t drive it like one . It will never be fast and should never be too fast . It’s too high up to drive like that . It seems like some people think they are driving A BMW M5 with these trucks, well it’s not and never will be. There is so much good info on here, and then there is so much crap. If you feel like the 3.5 is no good then sell the truck. Tacoma’s have good resale for a reason. They are a good solid truck. Period

^^^^^^^Well shit everyone going to laugh at me and say I’m stupid. Just changed both diffs at 6100 miles. Should have seen the crap in the front and rear. F’ng nasty shit. And the water diff fluid is a joke. I see why ecgs recommends the 80w140 dino oil.

Only color paint I was warned by the dealership not to get was that baby lighter blue back in 2019-2020.

Thats all fine, but not everyone has extra resources to piss away when there's no need to.

Don’t you just love when a thread is started and after it’s going the OP ghosts everyone?

It’s all good because once that happens there’s usually useful info thrown around in one form or another.

I have owned all 3 Gens of Tacoma and all I know is that my 94 -4, 98-V6, 2004-V6, 2008- V6 and now my 2021 has the V6 so not even sure what engine size number they were all I know is that I never blew one up or had major engine issues with any of them. Toyota has a good reputation for quality and reliability. just saying

I guess everyone’s got there opinions. I agree it’s not good to waste money . But I look at it this way
I do the work myself . The truck was a 40 k truck. Changing the oil more often isn’t going to hurt anything , and as a bonus the engine stays super clean inside . I know they say the oil can last way longer than 5 k but I think it’s a small price to pay to know for sure the oil is always fresh . Like I said it’s never failed me so if it ain’t broke why change it . But again everyone thinks differently

A lot of people have forgotten that there was a service campaign for many 2016/2017 trucks that were shipped from the factory low on transmission fluid. Running tens of thousands of miles low on transmission fluid will easily cause a transmissions life expectancy to be cut short.

Edit: apparently this is now a bigger issue than just the early years of the 3rd Gen

I've heard the opposite if a transmission is overfilled it can be damaged sooner than one that is slightly under filled.
